i don't know to me..it seems like they kind of digitally added in the watch on the game character after they struck a deal with the watch company..i doubt the watch was a work of imagination of the game developers for the game, and then later they presented there watch idea that came out of thin air, and the watch company made it custom to spec from scratch..i think it's more like...here are your watch choices..and the developer goes..we'll go with this one..and then someone from the studio says..let's make it more official looking..let's stick in the game character molding..o well..i mean..are we game collectors?..or watch collectors?..remote control plane collectors?..stuffed plushy collectors?..where do we draw the line?..and go back to the core...special edition box, a nice making of doc, a nice artbook, a steelbook, and maybe a special game case. that outta be enough.

I can see where you're coming from, but the full story is slightly less crass than that....

We wanted to do a watch because the N7 one was a pretty nice piece in person and sold much faster than we expected. We worked out a watch that was less expensive and seemed to fit the game and were going to sell it regardless.

Because we were working with Visceral so closely on the Dev Team Edition, we wanted to keep the watch subtle and somewhat believable in terms of in-game fiction (and also, there's only so much you can do without taking a lot longer or costing a lot more--neither of which seemed like good options). When I first saw it, I had kind of the same reaction. I thought we could have done more to make it really stand out, but I've really come around and think it works much better this way.

Visceral liked the watch, and we all liked the idea of it being something you could picture Isaac wearing with his civilian suit (and Ben Wanat came up with the great idea to name it in such a way that it alluded to being a functional, corporate kind of gift; like it was a standard-issue thing in the world of the game). Then, it turns out they were actually able to put it on him in the game.

This felt like a really cool little bonus, since we thought the watch was worth it either way and had committed to putting it into production before we knew it was going to be in the game. We felt like it would be a neat thing to see the watch that you wanted for yourself worn by the main character in the game. They didn't put it on Isaac just to have something to sell, and there definitely wasn't a product placement deal where we (or a watch company) paid them to compromise and throw something in your face.

I agree that this shot has some lighting situation that causes it to look almost awkwardly prominent, but the screenshots were intentionally taken in such a way that the watch would be noticeable since that's what we wanted to call attention to.... I haven't had a chance to play the game yet, but from the few screenshots I got to pick from for this, it seems like it'll be subtle and something you could easily miss (also, it's only visible when you don't have a suit on).

This is absolutely not for everyone (or even very many people). I think we got nice photos of it, but it's actually more impressive in person. I think it's a nice watch, and I think it's pretty fairly priced for a nice watch (especially one this large and heavy--I like big watches, but this thing is huge). It's nicely collectible with each one numbered and not many made, and I think it's subtly designed so as to be something people could be comfortable wearing. It's a nod to a cool game with a rich story, and there's a few scenes where you can play with it occasionally visible on your character. We just thought that was kind of neat.... It was never a sinister or half-baked plot to get a bunch of money from good people. If you like the game and want the watch, cool. If you need a watch and you like this one, cool. It really didn't go much further than that.

It's just an accesory, you guys sell clothes, playing cards, pendrives, it's fine, but the way to promote the watch was laughable. It's a watch, good, but don't go beyond that point questioning my intelligence with cheap marketing tactics and product placements. That watch has nothing to do with the dead space universe, don't force it in it. The watch in Metro 2033 is part of the gameplay mechanics planned by the dev, not this.

Well it's usually random and my bet is that the first watches goes to people within the walls of EA and Visceral. So getting number 1 is pretty much impossible.

Update on the EA store listing:

ITEM UPDATE: This item is TEMPORARILY out of stock. Since we're deeply committed to the the quality of merchandise we offer, we only sell product in the quantities that will be completed and inspected by the end of the sale or presale window. In this case, that meant we had to split the sales into two parts.

We have sold out of the first batch of stock that we have on hand, but the remaining stock of 300 will be available shortly. This item is still limited to the run of 500 individually numbered units. No additional will be made available after this sale is complete.

This jives with what was seen on the day it went live. After I put my order in, the amount available went down to 156, and then stayed there for about 15 minutes or so. If they'd have sold 344 up to that point, the number would have been changing faster.

Anyways.. that still means 300 are not yet sold, so only 40% sold.

The prices people are already paying for these on Ebay are... hilarious... to say the least. Silly people.

EDIT: This also jives with some other comments below about the initial listing being 200 ;)

I thought it was broke at first because the hinge over the dial wouldn't lock in, but then I noticed a super tiny plastic piece that holds the nob out so to stop it from engaging the battery. Popped that out and it everything snapped in place, AND the hands started moving.

Diggin' it. Although typing right now feels lopsided because my left wrist is now higher than my right wrist because of the strap. Yoinks.

I thought mine was broken at first also! Was relieved to discover otherwise. I got #75. The face on this thing is huge!

My outer black box got crushed a bit in one corner. The inside blue/black box is just a little too small. It won't stay completely shut when the watch is in it. The watch itself is very nice. Glad I jumped on this when I had the chance.
