Notice that the digital images are brighter, while the images of the prints are darker. The reason for this is that the individual digital image is the color corrected print setup (which is overly bright as to compensate for the darkening in printing).

The files used for the prints, aside from "Falling", have been made from in-game imagery; high resolution renders more specifically.

I personally think the selection is quite decent, although I don't understand the appeal of a piece like "Motorized Patriot".
It would've been nice to see some actual concept art that reflected the finalized look of Bioshock Infinite, but apparently it doesn't exist; a quick look through the artbook more or less confirms this (correct me if I'm wrong). I know Craig Mullins did a piece for Bioshock 2 that was great ("1959"), and I think something truly extraordinary could be accomplished if the right artist did a piece featuring "Songbird".

This would also have made a great addition.

Wouls you like to have seen additional/different art? If so examples, please.

And if you don't like the art, there's always another lighthouse... (or you know something along those lines).

Glorified screenshots.

It seems some people have very big walls since some of the large edition prints have sold quite a few; considering they're an edition of five.

I like a few if these. The big ones are freaking huge! I would have changed to a different picture of Elizabeth. Maybe one where she sends a tornado to threaten booker. That would have been cool, or where you first see monument island and the tower with the fireworks going off. These are nice though I was all over songbird and falling. Yeah the picture of the first look at Columbia would have been awesome

Yes the price is high, but these are basically fine art prints. C&B is a genuine art gallery, I don't think these are meant for the casual fan.
It's a proper giclee, but the price is high.

The popularity of Infinite may be a big boost towards legitimizing games and game development as genuine art, and I for one applaud the project. I'm also buying as many of these as will fit on my wall :bananayes:

Agreed. I'd say other than "Falling" and "Songbird", none of the artwork really jumps out at me.

The one you posted would easily be the best imo.

The Artists Proofs are the final prints that have been signed off on by everybody involved and is meant for the artists (or studio's) own archive.

It took 6 iterations on color, contrast etc. before the final images were completely right. Please take into account that almost no game studio or digital artist has experience in creating full RGB spectrum printed fine art prints (instead of CMYK), which means that all the color and lightness information needs to tested and iterated upon to get in perfect print what the art team is seeing on their screen in their studio.

Also, these screenshots are specially created renders in the engine that are tens of thousands of pixels wide.

Maarten Brands
04-25-2013, 08:35 PM
Finally, with regards to our selection of the imagery. That is always done in conjuction with the studio and time and budget etc. is always a factor.

We did decide on doing more actual in-game pictures of BioShock Infinite because these represent the final product the most accurately. It's nice to juxtapoze that with concept art for a complete whole but in this case most of the concept art images did not have a high enough resolution for our standards to make a decent sized print.

Also we make an effort to make game art & game artists a bigger part of the contemporary art world as a whole because we feel this is significant and these studios and artists are so influential in shaping our time and culture. We therefore sometimes select images like Ice Cream Shop ( a personal favorite) that raises a lot of questions about the scene that you are looking at, even if you don't know the game. We all know those games of course but we also try to find entry points for complete novices in the visual language of games to get a discussion going. We want to please the fans (I am one myself) and try to go a bit offbeat as well.

Sorry for the artyfarty speak :)

Exactly my point ingmar. I'm all about art and prints, but not what is from my understanding essentially an in-game screenshot blown up.

Wonder how boy of silence turns out. Can't imagine they'll have much flexibility if they're using screens because from what I remember they only appear at one little part in the entire game.

Not sure if it's the final version. Nothing special.

Am I the only one who considers it strange that there isn't any proper concept art that reflects the final look of the game?

I mean these three are quite nice, but the final game doesn't look like that.

And regarding that last pic I posted in the first post.

..."Interesting closing image. I used that exact same image to request an image that would "communicate the splendor of Columbia" to Irrational

...they didn't have time to create a high-res version (crunch time and all) but is we ever do a follow-up later with one or two prints something like that would definitely be part of it.

Due to the iterative process of design by Ken Levine et all the BioShock concept art (from about 4 years ago in this case) indeed never looks like the final game.

Swift, when I say the final look I mean...

I don't feel like writing a lot :)

It seems more like some of the concept art reflects a somewhat different version of Columbia.

You could say that's because it's concept art, but I think it has more to do with the fact that Infinite changed a lot over the development.

Hmm, which is better the liquid gloss or the diasec.. thoughts anyone?

They're both good. I've only seen large diasec irl.

Diasec/acryllic glass has sharp square corners, you could literally kill someone with a framed work :). Seen from the side the acryllic glass reflects some of the image which looks outstanding.

The liquid gloss has soft "bend" corners.

Naturally there are several reasons for choosing one over the other, they all involve fancy words. Yet the way the finish itself looks should also be considered, I think, depending on the piece you're framing.

They both "affect" the colors positively but in different ways.

In case anyone wonders what this kind of framing job costs, I've been given a price of 170 euros for 18x24 inches. I have no idea if that's the standard rate.

Mancoon

I would love to have them framed but the pictures are so big shipping to the states would be a fortune, I'll have to find someone here and hope they survive the long flight. Having been cheated on the mind in revolt signed book I couldn't miss out this time. I got a falling and large song bird. My wife will kill me when she sees it's nearly six feet long. I would like others but those to were the only ones to really catch my eye, plus running out of wall space.

It appears "Falling" will be the one to chase. There are only 14 left. If you have any interest at all, now is probably the time to jump onboard. I haven't seen anyone try and scalp anything from C&B yet, but I have a feeling this will be a highly sought after piece.

I wonder what framing would cost on one of the large prints... they're so tempting. I do like the patriot, they've still got some available too.

Normal glass (floatglass) does that. Museum glass is better.

http://i1031.photobucket.com/albums/y373/rasmusvn/Forum/Misc/Untitled-3.jpg (http://s1031.photobucket.com/user/rasmusvn/media/Forum/Misc/Untitled-3.jpg.html)http://www.flabeg.com/uploads/media/ARTControl_Perfectprotection_EN_02.pdf

(Liquid) gloss has the same contrast enhancing qualities as Diasec with acrylic glass but saturates the colors slightly, making for a very vibrant piece or artwork.http://www.candb.com/en/faq/25/#question_22

I haven't been able to compare before/after yet. I have however seen a cutout of "The Team", and it looks quite dull as a print.

Naturally I can't post a picture but when I first saw this (http://www.candb.com/en/artwork/352/shadow-of-the-shard-d.html) with acryllic glass, I had to blink twice.

amb6883

Museum glass is best though I do have plexi on on several prints (much lighter and less chance of damage from broken glass). I prefer to use all archival materials (acid free). I like my prints mint and never drymount or attach anything to them. Maybe I am picking but the diasec and liquid gloss processes just seems to destroy the prints value to me.

Well, if it's done from the beginning you get a "different" print.

= No borders, "stamp", and number on print.

+ a lifelong guarantee the print will last.

I do see your point if this isn't offered by the seller. On the other hand the print will be very well protected unless you damage it yourself. Then again that can also be said if you use acid-free materials.

What I find interesting is the point you just brought up.

If you get it unframed you get a

1. Signature on the front
2. Signature on the back
3. Number on the front of the print
4. Signed certificate of authenticity.

If you get it framed you get a

1. Signature on the back
2. Numbered sticker on the back (This should be signed as well!)
3. Signed certificate of authenticity.

Basically you lose out on a signature if you get it framed. You do get a cleaner more professional look but still, if Mr. Levine needs to sign for the unframed prints three times, he should do it for the framed ones as well! Hahah, I'm only kidding, but just a little bit...

The longer you keep them rolled especially at this size the more likely they are to develop creases just fyi. You really should not keep them rolled.

Yeah the framing kind of freaks me out. I've never owned a piece so large, I don't want to keep it rolled up but spent too much already on the pieces. I got large songbird #1 and Falling #3. Ha ha I like the cistine chapel idea that would be funny. I'm going to have to take stuff down as songbird will be my prized piece. 3 sigs from Ken on one piece is pretty cool as well, they look really legit and high quality . A large falling print would have been cool also.not really into screen shot art but I do like these two pieces plus it's cool they made them so limited, the rarest bioshock licensed stuff yet.

And they were flat and fitted a DVD-case? If that's the case, it's not really the same.

Thick paper doesn't necessarily equal quality.

All that being said, I would've loved to have seen some fantastic concept art as prints. Something we hadn't seen before.

I am kind of torn about getting anything done to these. I like to keep all collectibles in mint shape, to me this is adding a feature that wasn't an original part of the art, im sure it doesn't matter since the art house selling the service sells the art. It may turn off some collectors if you ever wanted to get rid of it but if you are keeping it you should do what you feel is best. I could be wrong but I think adding additional services to the art eliminates the signature on the front. I may get mine framed but that's because my frame shop can't order glass large enough, I imagine the gloss would really make Falling look great, find out if you miss out on a signature of you get it done

As stated previously: Yes, it does.

It always does with C&B. Acryllic and gloss that is.

05-01-2013, 04:07 AM
I think you have two different markets for these prints. Art collectors will not pay $5 if you get gloss poured on them, but they also are not the ones buying these cand prints. Video game collectors on the other hand seem to not care as long as it rare and an official release. You will be fine as long as the person you are trying to sell to does not collect art and video games. Though since I have not seen a single candb giclee on ebay it seems everyone buying is keeping them for themselves and is as long as you like it that is all that matters.

It's a tough call.

It's the signature on the front, plus the number and being able to access your print

vs

Making your print stand out more but getting a signature and a number on the frame

That is my take on it.

I still haven't made up my mind yet, I know Falling will look a lot more stunning in either gloss or acrylic, but not being able to access the print while losing out on stuff, I don't know.

Maybe if there was still a signature and a number on the print then maybe this would be a no brainer.

Mancoon
05-01-2013, 09:01 AM
You got a tough call to make, I personally don't think I could do it though. I collect alot of art outside of the game world of as well, That is signed or limited or just plain old. I love looking at my prints and having the signature and number looking straight back at me is a great feeling. I don't feel as connected to pieces that are not numbered on the front, a recent example is the boardwalk bioshock print, it's cool but the signature is in an envelope on the certificate of authenticity. It really is missing it. So really depends if you can tolerate it. I don't sell my prints but I come from that world that even knowing that the signature could have been there would bother me. Good luck on your choice as it would look great, I kind of look at it like buying a vintage sealed star wars toy only to open it to put it in a display case behind museum glass for better viewing .

I'm a pretty big art and lithograph collector (probably 30+ prints by now) and mulled on the decision of picking up one of these for a while and decided to bite the bullet and order an Elizabeth print (#6). It took me a while to justify it, especially with 30 dollar shipping, but ultimately I decided to pick it up. 18x31 is a reasonable size and the price wasn't that much for museum-grade quality.

I got it unframed, I will just matte it on a 24x36 frame I have and would prefer the signature on the front anyway. Cool to those of you that got in on the 5 run print of the massive size. 29x51 is wayyyy too big for me personally, even if the print would look stunning up in front of a couch or something. No room to store a thing that size if it's not up anywhere!

The landscape of the game is simply beautiful and will be a nice picture for a wall to add a breadth of scenic blue and the great building architecture.

I don't see myself ordering a lot of prints from C&B, but I think I could get one once and a while if it really pops out to me.

I have no interest in resale value, gloss all the way on my Falling. Were I a buyer on the resale market I would still think the coating (by the manufacturer) adds value. Not that mine is ever going anywhere. I'm also getting a large Patriot. I would have the big ones coated too, but the price is prohibitive. As it is, it's going to be a while before I can have them framed. I hate counting nickels but I'll be very interested in what others are paying for their framing when the time comes.

Mancoon
05-01-2013, 04:17 PM
Yeah framing will be interesting. For the large songbird I went to my frame shop with the dimension for an estimate, for the cheapest custom frame it would cost 200 dollars, that was just for the wood, they couldn't order glass large enough to do it and suggested I find a factory to make the glass custom. Throw in matting and nice glass and it will be a fortune, im guessing at least 500 to get the large one framed, the same shop quoted me 200 dollars for museum glass on an 18 by 24 for one of my tomb raider prints. I have no idea where to do this now, let me also know what you find out when that time comes.

amb6883
05-01-2013, 04:24 PM
You would not be able to use glass with a cheap frame as it would be too heavy and a frame that large that could actually support glass is damn expensive. You would be better off using plexi (which is more expensive than glass). Either way not cheap.

I don't know about other manufacturers like Tru-vue, but it seems Flabeg has glass that big, just.

Just had a brief chat with a local framing company and they have given me a rough price of ?140 for the smaller prints with "Conservation glass"

Just had a quick look and don't think it's as good as museum glass but not far off.

Obviously that's just a rough price will take my print in when I get it for a more accurate price!

Something to consider as well for the larger pieces is a close fit floating box frame with or without glass.

The prints do not need protective glass for UV damage (they are completely protected without. No glass also saves money but of course a shoulder or elbow bump can damage the work without glass...

P.S. In case of severe damage C&B can always assists with replacements.

Be sure to post some pictures of the gloss version :)

About signage. We normally use pencil. The benefit is no fading but the downside is that the paper has an invisible UV foil to it which protects against outside influences including the lead from a pencil :). You can only apply so much pressure, so the signature on the front will be always be slightly light this way.

We regard the front signature as the least important though. It looks nice but there are so many ways to frame an artwork now that there is a likelihood the white surrounding border will be cut off. Dibond works are all signed on the back for instance via label. That is also why we provide the hand-signed, archival quality (no chemicals) label in case you want to be creative later you can stick that on the back of your frame or other or just stick in on the back of the print. The sticker is signed via pen most of the time.

Thanks for pointing this out. A bit disappointing to see that the first customer we ever sold 2 prints of the same image immediately puts one on Ebay :(

What do you guys think? Should C&B issue a one print per customer policy unless you are a trusted/returning collector?

Mmm, well can't be helped really. At least if you bought one from us direct you know you get value if this is the resale price...

But I believe one per person..no need for multiples..especially at the start ..maybe after a month..then buy as many as you want

I'll fess up and admit I bought 2 and sold one. I'll also admit it was a mistake, and not just because the resale price was pretty low. I came to this forum because this is where people talk about stuff I like. At that time (around the time I made my C&B order) I was enamored with quick profits from flipping stuff on ebay. That sheen has quite worn off for me already, it's not what I want to do with my time.
There are plenty of people here on the forum that sell, and many of those artificially inflate their own prices too rather than auction and let the market determine it's own value. I'm stuck with a few more items I preordered that I'll still need to move, but I'm getting out of this nasty business.
Maarten, I'm sorry to have disappointed you, I will remain a customer because I love the work you guys put out.

Yep.

Yep.

I stand by that. I have no interest in what gloss does to the resale value because it's not going anywhere. Go be smug somewhere else please.

You're actually not the first one to buy two :). I saw the edition no. in the Ebay sale so I knew which buyer this was.

No worries btw. You're free to do with your items and purchases what you like. And if buying and selling is your thing that is fine by us as well. It's the nature of the art market right? It's just that there is a big waiting list for Falling and we had to dissapoint a lot of people which made me type type a sad smiley (plus the fact that I liked the idea of everybody just holding on to our products :).

For now there is no way for us to limit the no. of items during online purchase so any policy in this regard will be for the future anyway.

I understand the frustrations. As a retailer, I'm sure a strong aftermarket will do nothing but help sales, but having to turn fans down really has to suck. As a fan, paying reseller prices for stuff I missed is a real burn too.
Of course everyone wants to make money, and the buy 2 sell 1 instinct is very strong, especially for higher end products. Most of us need help affording these things, and reselling can really help that, which is why that temptation is so strong.
I think i put my scruples aside to do this though, and I don't like the way that made me feel.

Haha! I guess I am apologizing. I don't want to do it anymore.
edit:
The issue here is that we received early access, and in this particular case that access was abused.
Primarily my apology is to Maarten and C&B.
When things go on sale to the public at large, there is no conflict because everyone who is paying attention has equal opportunity. This one was different (for me).

to amb6883: you're right, flippers gonna flip, it's whatever ;)

It is one of those thing where if you don't do it there will always be people who do.

The big unanswerable question is where do you draw the line on such items and if you should buy extra and how many.

Funny thing is i bet everyone on this forum have done it (or still do), even the people who will chastise others have done it.

I have come to the conclusion there is always going to be someone mad at you whatever job you have. If your a mechanic people think you are screwing them over on parts and labor, if you are a lawyer... well no one likes or trust lawyers. Every business is cut throat in one respect or another... this is why in America about half our countries wealth is owned by the top 1%. And in most other countries it is about the same I am sure. In most situations morality and survival do not go hand and hand.

Imagine if insurance companies were overly generous and overly moral... or banks. They would all fail.

Just wanted to throw that out there. I am really just talking in general terms... no specific issue (like the one being talked about). I am sure i will be shot down by someone but reality is harsh, and "most" of us do the best we can.

This is always debated and i agree with you flatout.

Maarten can we ask what is next in line from C&B. More bioshock or another franchise

P.s Flatout, have you settled on that as your new avatar? Seems to be changing a bit of late

Maarten I really want a big daddy print the size of the large Songbird. Really really badly.

without derailing the thread anymore, as the owner of the print listed on ebay i feel i should explain myself.

yes i bought more than one but i never intended to list one on ebay straight away. However, my waste of space work colleague assured me he would pay me if ordered together to save on group shipping. As he did not i am left with an oversized print and a hole in my pocket

i was simply trying to recoup my money. If i was out to be extortionate i would have listed the item for a crazy buy it now price. I listed it as an auction starting at 0.99p. I do frequent these forums and I did not mean to cause offense or disappoint so i have had the listing removed from ebay.

For now i will keep the print while i decide what to do

Well, we're releasing Journey this Wednesday and if all goes well we'll have another very exciting game art launch end of July/early August, but due to legal reasons I can't quite reveal that yet.

Lets assume we're talking to/working with all the major publishers and studios at the moment, want would you guys really want to see most?

P.S. There is also an opportunity to do an extra set of Mass Effect. Interesting or no?

Perhaps if something like:

- Illium
- Other art that hasn't already been released as lithographs

was possible.

Beyond has some great concept art too. The same goes for Remember Me, but the game didn't do that well, I think.

Ah now that is a good question. Personally would love to see some Alan Wake, recon you could get some amazing shots from that.

I promised these forever ago but with the Journey release in full swing I thought I should go ahead and show these off in case you want to know more about or are on the fence about gloss coating.

So here is a mostly the same picture of my Falling in liquid gloss:
http://i42.tinypic.com/2602zc0.jpg
It's incredibly vibrant, I just couldn't seem to get a picture to fully capture it.

The details are very crisp. A few closeups:

http://i42.tinypic.com/2eyvx4i.jpg

The coating itself is very thick.
http://i39.tinypic.com/339pmht.jpg

The whole thing is mounted on a steel frame.
http://i43.tinypic.com/nluat4.jpg

The Levine signature and other documentation are stuck on. Some of you may not care for that, it didn't matter to me.
