Are the quality really that good that people are paying $800-1000 on ebay for a skull kid or is it due to rarity or both? (Or are they just nuts?)

Or is it due to the fact people only find out after they have been sold out and the collectors have cash to burn?

A little bit of all.

Its a well-done piece. It's Zelda. I think its primarily its due to its rarity, nostalgia effect, and size (not a HUGE statue compared to others). What's crazy about that one is that the original cost was only like $100 or $199 (don't recall). I've seen it (even recently) go for $650 on Ebay (auction ended with a private sale). But that's still a huge markup. Generally the F4F Zelda figures will sell for a TON (especially the exclusives) once they sell out on the site.

For the longest time you were able to get the Epon & Link for even under MSRP, but now that they're sold out in NA the prices have already started to rise.

The Midna Exclusive and Zant Exclusives usually go for over $1,000 at times too... just ridiculous IMHO.
