Those are pics that I took of a sealed copy. I have an open copy around here somewhere too. I'll take a pic of the contents soon, if you'd like.

Wow is that yours? I've been trying to find a fair priced one for awhile, but haven't found anything in the sub $200 range.

Yeah, it's mine. I'm thinking a ton of collectors are not aware that this exists. Again, single print of 15k copies. I lucked out and scored a couple. Opened one, kept one sealed. :D

Wow nice! When I went on release to my local Canadian Gamestop they didn't even know what it was :(

I've seen a handful of releases with no disc and just a code, usually it's DLC packs for certain games (I think I have one for GTAIV The Lost and Damned)
I suppose it could technically be allowed into the database since the "standard edition" is the version of the game in the online store, making a retail copy a more "special" version of the game.... but it's just weird.
Why is this such a collector's item? is it just the rarity? I mean low production aside I'd have a hard time convincing myself to pay $200 for what is essentially a standard game case and a few pieces of paper.

I'm not sure either. It's probably mostly due to the scarcity.
Historically though, other versions of Marvel Vs Capcom 2 have consistently been sought after. I remember that the Xbox and PS2 versions were always relatively expensive in the aftermarket. Even the Dreamcast version seemed to fetch above average sums regularly years after it released. So maybe its history as a collectable game has lead some to believe that the ps3 retail pack is worth the money.
Here are current auctions for the ps3 version. All sellers are asking from $200-$300:

cool item, i must say though ive never understood why codes and PSN cards come presented in game cases? handy to have spares in the event you need one, but other than that it just seems a waste since once the value is redeemed your left with a box

This is new to me as well! Is this the only game to be released in this form so far, or are there others? I assume this is an American thing, as I have never seen this kind of retail package on sale here in the UK

The only other instance I know of are for the GTAIV and Fallout 3 DLC Packs.... both had 2 or 3 releases in retail game boxes with nothing but a marketplace code inside.
I own the GTAIV Lost and Damned Retail DLC Box. (only because it was cheaper to buy that than buy it online)
There may have been other release of this nature but to be honest it's not something I've ever looked for.

Hmm...I guess people want the box art for keep sake. I still wonder if anyone will be stupid enough to buy used code and box for $300. It isn't worth it IMO.

Things are only ever worth what people are willing to pay for them.
Their have been a lot more "worthless" items have have sold for a lot more money than this thing
Likewise there have been a lot more "valuable" items that have sold for a lot less than this too.
