Interesting that it's says it's a DRM free copy, does this mean standard copies are not DRM free.

It depends where you get it. Steam is technically DRM. Them delivering a non-DRM version is not surprising though... the Humble Voxatron Debut bundle that went on last year had The Binding of Isaac DRM free.
