The mod is there purely to play backups and other unsigned code. I never used it much to be honest.
NTSC Gamecubes had the option of switching between JPN/US as they all had dual bios's, a simple toggle switch was all that's needed. I removed the switch and made it permanently US as all my games were US versions. PAL machines are totally different, especially with their video output, but that's another story.
