Guess you haven't been in too many hospitals huh - don't worry it's a good thing!
Most hospitals I know of are built using thick concrete walls which tend to help block the signal to cell phones.
Also when you have a family member in hospital, it's generally not the best idea to pop out your phone and say "hang on, it's really important for me to get this (collectible, game, figure or other item) mailed to this guy - so please don't pass away while I make sure so-and-so gets what he wants as quickly as possible."
