In Australia two retailers offered it, one for $900 AUD and the other for $800. I got mine at the cheaper price, but had to pay for half up front to secure it as they only had a very small amount of stock - 20 or so.

Ah, that makes more sense! I didn't pay attention to you being from Australia and the AUD conversion making a difference there.
Regarding the cancellations, Amazon does that here in the US sometimes as well, but not as bad as Best Buy or Walmart in my experience. They don't ever charge a deposit mainly because of the US credit card laws and the frowned upon area around charging before shipping. Some companies that have US outlets still charge on purchase (Squaresoft store etc.) but most only on or right before shipping.
I still think a lot of times these cancellations happen that the distributors over promise companies what they have available. The seller always bears the brunt of it, but that is just because they are outward facing. Of course that doesn't make it suck any less if they cancel on you.
