is there ANY way to get around this when ordering stuff? It's horrendous how many times I've paid a ridiculously high amount for import costs. I tried contacting them about information but didn't really get much of a useful reply out of it other than a standard copy/paste reply.

When you're importing via forwarding service you can set the price as low as you want. Tried it few times and it's been working so far. Haven't used it yet to import more expensive items but after paying a huge custom taxes for souls of cinder statue decided to go for it next time
