If you are scared. Send the money as a payment which you will pay extra 4% fee on top of the price then you will have paypal protection from that.
It is all about trust in this forum. As you can see everyone is a fellow collector and there were even transactions that cost 2-3 thousand going on around here.
You can also check the feedback of the seller in the forum to see if he is trust worthy. I have to say it is at your own risk if you decided to use the "gift" option.
