Re: Microsoft Flight Simulator - Premium Deluxe Edition
Just a heads up for those who want to buy this edition not just to collect it, but also play it. You can't just use the code and download the game from the store like every other decent, boxed PC game in 2020... you have to install the whole thing using the disks (and the early adopters' reports tell about very long hours, full of errors and restarts) and then there will be a dvd 1 security check every time you play the game! For someone like me who plays this type of game in many short sessions every day, it sounds like it will become very annoying very fast... it's one thing to pass a security check once when you validate the installation, but to play with the dvd inserted in this day and age? Those things are slow, loud and freeze the whole system too often.
I'm grateful though that they made a physical edition in a dying niche (physical editions for AAA pc games). Unfortunately with this edition it seems they wanted to remake the entire experience like it's 2001 again, with the freaking disk in the drive and all. To Aerosoft's defense (the producer of the physical edition), they say it was Microsoft who insisted for this backwards 'feature'. Seriously, this should be mentioned on the product description so people know from the get go. Now, it's true that there are means to bypass this, such as downloading Daemon or whatever shady 3rd party utilities to make an iso image of the disk and mount it virtually every time you play, but honestly, after almost 2 decades of Steam convenience, I was hoping this would be a thing of the past. That being said, I've got mine and the product itself has a nice quality feel about its content and presentation, I love the artbook and also pretty good bang for the buck, considering it costs about the same as the equivalent digital edition. As my storage space shrinks, I get to appreciate more and more these "down to Earth", no-nonsense editions that are compact and look good aligned on a shelf with the regular boxes. The only thing that I would have added (and called it a collector's edition in the process) would have been something made of metal... I always associate flying with metal, so I'd have paid gladly more for a steelbook, or a coin, or even a fat metalpak case to enclose everything. Maybe Xbox will get a different physical edition.
