Default How do you guys feel about Kickstarter CE's?

Hey guys,
So one thing i've been curious about for a while, how do you think collectors editions will hold up in value and demand years from now, that were exclusive to Kickstarter projects? Do you think they'll be in less supply and more demand than AAA titles CE's in the future?

Apparently, nearly 1500 games were successfully Kickstarted in 2012. Judging from experience, i'd say a good percentage of those all had collectors editions offered as a pledge. As well, mostly all of the kickstarter exclusive collectors editions are highly limited. I'm just wondering if you guys think those are worth your efforts to collect for?

I've donated for a couple, namely the Pier Solar RPG and the Ouya console. I did also pledge for the still active Torment project but recently cancelled it because I don't have the funds any longer to support it. I'm curious if releases like that (the collectors edition for Torment for example) are something you guys see as being highly collectable in the future?

Personally I could see them being highly collectable only for the fact that most people I seem to talk to are unwilling to jump on the Kickstarter bandwagon for the sole reason of not wanting to spend money on something they may not see the benefits of for a couple years or so. When it is released years later though, they'll want to purchase a CE.

Thoughts?

I personally think it would be more miss that hit with these but you never know, but I think if items like the Ouya take off items like the brown console might become valuable in the future.

Some Ce's might get valuable, but only the ones from an established franchise, or if you get lucky that it will start a new franchise (imagine the first assassins creed was a kickstarter project an you got a very limited ce of it, now that would be valuable.

How many kickstarter CE's are there for PS3 or Xbox Games? Any?

I've seen a ton of PC and some retro one's as well but never seen a PS3/Xbox one

In my opinon Consoles are and will always be more collectible than PC simply due to the history of the companies behind them (I.E. People collect Sony, Xbox etc.)

I posted something about this about a year ago. Re-read it and I still feel the same way. Here it is:

"I like the idea of kickstarter. If there is a game that I think I'd really like, and the only way it gets made is for fans of the game to fund the production, then it seems like a great way to go.

But the more I think about it, this could ruin the "purity" of my collection. I think we all have certain guidelines we use when deciding whether or not to purchase new items for our collections. For me, one of the guidelines is to get the most complete version of a CE that exists (thank goodness I don't collect games that aren't available through US retail because the AC series would kill me).

If you look at the recent kickstarter campaigns though, the editions that are "complete" come only with hefty donations. And sometimes the editions you get at, say, $2,500.00 are unique from those at $250.00. I could probably do this once or twice, but there's no way that that level of donation would be sustainable over time. Plus since there's a time limit on when you can donate the money, and some of the pieces in the editions aren't tangible (e.g. a shrine to me in the game), if I didn't have the money on hand at the time, it would be forever out of reach...I couldn't maintain the status quo for my collection.

Just something to ponder!"
