Default DVD Disc better stored horizontally?

Hey @ all, a friend of mine told me today that dvd's degrade with time even if not used, especially if they're kept vertically. Is this true or false from your experience? I've always kept my boxes on the shelf in vertical position.

I've never noticed any difference whether I stored by discs horizontally or vertically. All mine are vertical otherwise the cases tend to get squashed.

Burnt DVDs can and do degrade over time no matter what orientation. Stamped (is originals) should in theory last decades. I think your friend is having you on.

A very similar sounding arguement is made about what orientation you should have your console in when in use

I.E. discs played in a console vertical may get scratched more than horizontal etc.

I always heard that it was better to play your disc vertically in a player rather than horizontally to prevent scratching....

dude was asking about actual storage

but if we talking about whilst game is running in the system steer clear of boat trips and bumpy car rides to minimize scratching

Other way around I think you mean - Horizontally is always best.

Thanks all for clarification, I confronted him and he admitted he read that long time ago on the web and stored his movies and games horizontally ever since. We googled this together on my phone and found a forum thread from 2004 (lol) where people were indeed debating this but it was the other way around, they were afraid horizontal is bad because of gravity putting pressure on the disc
