That reminds me of my plastic folder that I used to store my school stuff in.

I'd be interested in how other collectors tackle this problem as well. I have a lot of books and would like the spines protected from damage.

That's why I would love to track down the stiff plastic cases that fold around steelbooks but in a larger size....

That is pretty good for the slimmer standard versions for sure - thanks

The ones you refer to are made specifically for steel collectors Mags

At least the dozen or so different times I've seen them sold it was always for steel collectors

Oldest known example of them was custom made by collectors to protect steels much like the official slipcases that come with some steels

If you want I could track down the thread on another board that details making your own plastic slipcases out of thin sheets of poly-carbonate?

Personally, any guides i want to keep pristine i either have still sealed or i plastic baggy them. I then store them all flat,i dont stand them on their ends like normal people as over time this leads to the shelf wear or spine damage problem. your worried about They take up a little more shelf space but,i know i could leave them like that for 20 years & they will still be all nicey nice

Not to be nitpicky but I'm fairly sure if you lay CE guides on top of each for 20 years the weight alone would be enough to cause damage

How many do you put on top of each other?

Usually 5 or 6,the heavier/thicker ones on the bottom. Trying to think how they would damage over time,i mean its laying flat with a small amount of weight upon it. Surely its not really able to compress the book any further than it is unless its an imense amount of weight or pressure

Uh small amount of weight?

Average weight for a CE guide is around 3 lbs or so

5 or 6 would be 15 - 18 pounds laid on something for an extended period of time

That is how I store guides when I don't display them but I fully realize it would likely cause some damage to the spine after time

If you do it right I suppose and have boxes large enough that you can lay them on top of each other while keeping the spines out of the way if that makes sense

I suppose I don't know for sure it would cause damage but it seems fairly likely to me

The main reason shelf wear happens is gravity over time mostly, weight over time

Fully expect same principle to apply to those in boxes

Thought you got the shelf wear from moving the books in & out of the shelf, having them stored on the edges as well as the fact the hard covers are slightly larger than the actual page of the book so you have the weight of the pages bearing down on the bottom of the book. Then you have this weight having a tendency to pull pages away from the spine as well. Well, thats what i always thought

Just had a quick think & a look,i came up with this on fleabay. Providing its sturdy enough i think this could actually work to store you books in & display them

I suppose having them vertical would pose more risk to the binding due to gravity but do still think there are issues if you store guides on top of each other in the long haul

I don't really worry about it that much to be honest

When I display them it will be vertical as horizontal display would bother me
