Talking will our collectors editions be WORTHLESS!!?? in the long run?

..i was chatting up a bit with someone who works in the world of economics, and also is a savvy collector of various things, he pretty much alluded to the fact that, the video game market,..and talked about how my approach was silly when it came to "collecting" video games, and actually believeing overall, there a "good investment"..to summarize, what he said,..is that game companies and entertainment in general is heading towards digital distribution, and physical media discs are on their way out in the next few years, especially DVD and CD, in place Blu-Ray also has a shelf life remaining of about 6 years, before that medium is discontinued,..also DVD players, will be phased out, just as we see the trend of CD players, making our CD/DVD's "obsolete" and inoperable in the next 4-5 years, and of course gamemakers tend to re-release nostalgia games with updates, enhanced play and graphics for an attractive price, since most collectors editions are composed of bonus CD/DVD content, and the next gen consoles, will probably have limited backwards support if any at all,..so if we held on to our prized editions for maybe another 5-10 years?...what will become of them?..when the media disc format is obsolete? (cd/dvd?)..and if it is an extremely popular title, it will be re-made, and better than ever for a very affordable price..and ask yourselves?..is anybody really seeking out PS2?..collectors editions?..and would you pay at least what it cost, let alone top dollar?..no, of course, not..you would say..it's dated, a relic, and offer or valued maybe at 25% of original price...this is a losing game, where just pouring our money into it, and it'll give us joy for a year or two..but will we regret it 5 years from now?..we all know the next gen systems are going to be all out 2-3 years from now...when we "show off" our current collection?..is anybody really going to be moved?..or impressed?..no, it appears at first as useless junk,..when BIOSHOCK 2 collectors edition came out,..it went for $100..now a days, i see it for as little as $15...still rotting on the shelf, in the bargain bins etc...and this is a AAA current gen popular title...and it's only been out maybe 2 years?....this hobby of ours is more or less leading the way of the pied piper.. SORRY FOR THE RANT, IT'S ALMOST 3:00 AM, AND I AM BORED AND AMPED ON RED BULL..HAHAHAHAHA ..I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR PEOPLES THOUGHTS, ESPECIALLY THOSE WHO KEEP GAMES SEALED, AND BELIEVE THEY TRUELY WILL INCREASE IN VALUE OVER THE LONG RUN,..(NOT ACCOUNTING FOR/OR ADJUSTING FOR INFLATION)...as opposed to those, who believe it comprises nothing more than useless junk and trinkets, and 6-12 months from now, nobody will care, unless it is extremely limited of no more than 1,000....for instance, there's a lot of hype led to believed about the sonic generations collectors edition..how it is in demand and a hot item..unfortunately,..those in the know...have said, demand has not been as much as anticipated, as where led to believe, and of course there's reasons for it not even being offered in north america, and the game itself..is selling SLOWER AND LESS than anticipated..these are all troubling signs..no matter how cool we think it is,..we are a very small minority..and sales numbers say it's not "that" cool as we think it is..meaning it won't hold tangible value, or be even worth what you paid for it down the road, hype aside..of course others could care less, and tear right into the boxes, and play with all the gadgets, and just throw them out or give them away down the road when they've become bored of them i suppose?

Here is one outdated and totally worthless game for you:

or for something a little bit more popular:

As for myself, I do not collect to re-sell in the future, there are better ways to invest your money and have it grow faster. I collect for myself, and almost never leave anything sealed.

I collect for my own personal enjoyment, tbh, I couldn't care less if they were worth jack shit in the future, I collect because they make me happy, so if in years I have to get rid of them and they make me some money, great, but if they don't, so be it xx

@thesirren...those 2 are examples of individuals who believe they can find a "sucker" to pay those prices, neither one of them is limited, and neither one of them is being purchased at those ridiculous inflated prices, in fact those are "buy it now" prices you can pull out of a horses ass...those 2 examples do not set precedent for us to consider this an "investment"...i collect because there are some really fantastic versions available in PAL territories..but i'm also a fool thinking there eventually will retain value..please show me examples of current purchase prices or bidders for anything close to that, and you will not find any...btw..this is not directed towards anybody or anyones sensitivities, i merely instigating a debate amongst those who keep games "mint and sealed".(as i also fall into that group) .in hopes it will rise in price substantially, when overwhemingly, that is NOT the case..with the exception of maybe 1 or 2 current gen titles at most, but a lot of us are collecting in the dozens..

Some games will retain value while most certainly not. If you have a mint condition atari or some oldies, it will sure cost lots. When I mention some games retaining value will be those

1) a great game in that current gen, great storyline, great music, great everything
2) have a continuation of story up till recently (for example MGS)
3) a collection within collections (Final Fantasy for example)

The one I've seen sold up to 600 dollars is Sealed Final Fantasy 7 Black Label. You probably wont get Uncharted 1 2 and 3 collector's worth as much unless they make 4 5 6 7 on the new gen consoles.

To actually know if it retains value, wait another 30 years or so.

It is far too early to say which items will be rare and sort after in the future and which will be bargin bin items. Well for current gen items anyway.

There have already been many game that have increased in value over this short period of time.

Example:
Tales of vesperia Limited Edition NTSC
Crisis 2 Nano edition PAL / NTSC
Demon Souls both editions NTSC/ PAL
infamous 1 special edition PAL
Dead Rising 1 limited Steel book edition PAL
Dead Space Ultra NTSC
Mirror Edge runner bag/steelbook edition. NTSC/PAL
Assassin creed 2 Black Edition PAL
Metal Gear solid 4 Play.com edition PAL
Yakuza 4 + ichiban Box PAL
Etc.

That is justs a small list,

I myself collect for the joy, I sometimes buy two copies from oversea version to save shipping cost but have little to no interest in selling on in the future.

Saying that it certainly good to know that I can sell on for the same or more of the original cost in the future should the need arise.

Any current tales of games, will certainly increase in value.. heck you can't even find a sealed new copy in stores (AU) now.. even pre-owned lol. Ordered 2 copies, but if collector's turn up I will get 3 of that (Tales of Graces F). Now working on some cash for Tales of Xilia Console

Maybe games with less popularity, their CE price might drop, but for those popular ones it might rise over long period of times and may be regarded as GEMS where people would use alot of money to get it.

in regards to dead space, that one was strictly limited to 1,000....a majority of the ones we collect are produced in hundreds of thousands.
