I learnt a while ago to bid more then you want to pay at least if you lose you can sell well I didn't want to pay that much anyway

She means, if you're bidding on an item and the maximum you want to pay is ?100, then bid ?130 - as chances are it won't go that high anyway. If it does go that high, chances are you'll then be outbid, so when you lose at least you can say "I didn't want to pay that much anyway" since it will have went even higher than your maximum xx
