Default Removing stickers and residue from old PC cardboard boxes?

This is just a random picture I fond but this is the type of box I'm dealing with.

http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Commandos-Behind-Enemy-Lines-PC-Games-1998-/00/s/MTIwMFgxNjAw/z/aDoAAOxyaRZR5bsw/$(KGrHqN,!rkFG9sdFYFPBR5bswcOIg~~60_57.JPG

Does anybody have advice on the best way to remove these stickers and their residue without damaging the box? Some of these stickers have been on for over 10 years and the boxes are made of cardboard so it can be very easy to damage the box and accidentally remove part of the art on the box because of the sticker.

Some also have dried sticker residue and I just don't know what to do. It's impossible to just peel it off so I know something like Goo Gone would probably be best but I'm afraid to try anything without some advice.
