Default Re: will our collectors editions be WORTHLESS!!?? in the long run?

I just realized there are two twisted members in the forums =).

People have been collecting coins and stamps and art pieces and everything else for ages. Some lose value, others become treasures. It doesn't matter if digital distribution is going to kill the market because it will not undo what's already done and sold and existed at a certain time in history. In the worst possible scenario, it's worth for the joy of collecting =).

well.... not all economic predictions will be correct
one would be worried if he or she is keeping stuff to make a profit
if its for personal enjoyment, then no worries

As it stands for this generation & the last generation CE,LE or even standard games will hold some value to someone somewhere. Its as simple as that. How much value is a different story & a constant variable,if as already has pointed out its a game or genre with a cult following there will always be some form of demand for it. Look at Star Wars for example, that has one huge cult following & some of the collectors will pay top dollar for things simply because they are sealed or just hard to find. Some Star Wars games & CE still go for a fair amount of money. The original Xbox Star Wars games still get a good price for them from both collectors of Star Wars & video games.

Some of my stuff is sealed, some of its not. Things that are sealed are kept that way simply as i have no need to open it that i can think of so it sits on the shelf. At the moment,i am trying to see if i can get every single original Xbox game made starting with the PAL versions first. I am not doing this to make a profit,i am doing this firstly because i think it would be cool to look at a wall full of games & know i have every single one made. Secondly,i know that sooner or later some of these games will just either cease to be around at all for whatever reason or be so hard to find its ridiculous. So by doing this,to me its simply me preserving a part of history, the history of gaming.

In regards to the next gen Xbox One & PS4,simply put we are completely screwed. If used games cant be used on your own console without having to go online, which sooner or later will cease to exist these games will be worthless. If you cant just put a disc into any machine what good will they be. You would have to have a console the game came from & hope the console never dies if you ever wanted to part with your collection for any reason. If you dont have it or it dont work, then all those used games would be worthless. What about new games, just as worthless if the online servers cease to exist & you have to be online to activate them etc. Next gen is possibly where video game collecting may meet its end unfortunately.

My two cents,peace out

I am of a similar mind

If DRM exists on both new systems (X1 and PS4) then we are not buying games so much as renting them for as long as the activation servers remain active

As you said, once those servers go so do the games unless they remove the authentication procedure but I cannot imagine MS being that benevolent

I think we are coming to the tailend of the golden age of collecting but that's just my thoughts of course

The servers going offline will be the nail in a games coffin. The second Steel Battalion for the original xbox for example, fantastic game & ahead of its time really. Problem is its an online only game & as no more online access is available its simply a dust collector that has no use except as an ornament. This,to me is just one example & theres plenty more of a great game now rendered completely useless simply because it has no online access available anymore. If this is what the future will hold for all games from now on,again we will be simply completely & utterly screwed sooner or later. The golden age of collecting may yet continue, only if we can use a disc on any console & only if we dont need online access. Until further details are forthcoming, video game collecting as we know it is on the edge of a cliff,by the years end we will know if we have been pulled away from the cliff or shoved over the side with no remorse
