Terraria developer, Redigit, has recently announced on the Terraria Online forums that there are plans for a limited physical Collector's Edition release of the game:

We are also very excited to announce that we have partnered with Head Up Games to release a boxed collectors edition copy of Terraria. There will be some fun goodies found inside, and even a special in-game item! We'll have more details on this later.

This looks to follow in the footsteps of Super Meat Boy which did something similar this year, long after the game had been available for download, as something special for the fans
