What do you guys think of Digital only versions? I've seen a bunch of PC titles doing it, have there been any console titles yet?

I think they are pretty pointless, especially calling them collectors editions. I have nothing against digital copies of games, i have purchased a few, but what are you actually collecting if you download a digi version?

If the day comes when all that is 'special' about collectors editions s DLC I will stop buying them, the vast majority of 'exclusive' DLC is eventually available separately anyway.

Then how do you feel about collectible virtual goods? Think madden Ultimate team cards? Those are collectible.

Well I've never heard if those Madden cards, but I personally like to have physical items in my collection. I can't really see the point in digital 'collections'.

My collection of digital porn is fairly sizeable though :P

i would quit this hobby if everything or a majority of things become digital..i think it was sega that released a set of sonic trading cards..but the kicker is..it's all digital..you pay for the item..so you can stare at it on your tv screen..then when your harddrive crashes or needs replacement..well there's goes your card collection that you paid for..c'mon now..how much can cardboard stock cost to print them like the old days?..i would of collected the sega set if that option was there.

They have those in NHL, too. I wouldn't call them collectible. All you do is buy the best team. Just more EA "pay-to-win" crap. Plus, are the cards not completely irrelevant as soon as next year's game comes out?

The day physical copies stop running is the day i pretty much stop buying new games, il work my way backwards, screw digital collectibles and CE's first server crash or hack and you lose everything.

It's not collectibles if it's digital.. That's "Virtual"

In future you'll see people selling hard disks with "50 collector edition games stored on it" :lmao:

The only good thing about everything going digital is that it will save me a ton of money and space. The second they stop putting games on media, I'll stop paying. Simple as that. Go ahead and start download only games. You won't be seeing any more of my money, that's for sure! >.<

i have a gut feeling that playstation 5 and the next xbox after "720" and the next super wii u will be all digital downloads and what would happen is that either you will download off the internet or will go to store and buy an elaborate shiny plastic card with the game art and download code on it with some store exclusive content on the plastic card..that'll way places like gamestop and other retailers will stay in business or still have a video game section selling hardware and the game cards...lets face it..this is the direction we are heading..i say the upcoming new generation will be the last with physical disc based media.

CEs with DLC plastic cards then?

For standard games, you either download from online or cards from retailers with download instructions?

For CEs, these cards will come in the CE with the rest of the other collectibles?

I have no problem with digital download. When company start calling them collector's digital edition, that is where I shake my head. I don't see any point of buying digital collectors edition when someone can download them and share it over the internet.

I have (not sure if is collector's in this case) special DLC for PlayStation All-Stars: Battle Royale, this unlock (another) costumes for the characters in the game (still unused) any of you need it? I can trade it with any other DLC

I have no desire to ever own a digital collector's edition

Honestly I dislike the idea of DLC anyways

All part of the battle between publishers and retailers like gamestop who sell 2nd hand copies thereby stopping the publisher from getting any money off the 2nd sale

I mean we all know that the DLC they release 3 or 4 months after the game came out originally was ready to go on release right?

Also CE/retailer specific DLC irks me because then it can cost an arm and a leg just to get all the outfits for your character :(

Luckily I don't really like to accessorize, sometimes I'll buy mission DLC but that's about it

I love to accessorize. On U3's multiplayer my Elena has cat ears matching here blouse in colour and my villian has a top that's flaming (purple) and a yeti mask!

If it was the only option I wouldn't like it - I love having my physical items that I can look at and instantly remember the game and enjoying it.
Also the digital ones defeat part of the point of collecting imo, part of it is getting something rare but there's effectively an infinite amount of digital ones. (Right enough, on the other hand, at least some folk wouldn't miss out with digital CEs.)

However, if I already own the actual CE of a game and I was going to pick the same game up on, say, Steam later on, I might splurge for the digital CE if it's not much of a price difference if it has the soundtrack; that way I can easily have a backup copy of soundtracks in case something goes wrong on my PC and then I wouldn't have to dig out the physical CD if I wanted it.

As for the Ultimate Team type of stuff whether that's Madden or the one I've heard about, Fifa, personally I don't quite get the appeal of that, however I know that loads of folk do - Again it comes down to it not being a physical thing, like I can look at my shiny Gyarados I got when Pok?mon was popular and I still love it because of the happy memories from it just by holding it, but I can't imagine years later looking at a screen showing I had, hell, I don't know, Filip Sebo as a virtual trading card and have it bring back the same feelings/memories.

Basically I think what it is, is that with digital, I can only see it but with physical stuff, there's sight, smell (like the Asian DA:O box smells lovely) and there's tactile feedback and it all combines for me into something that lets me experience my emotions, feelings and memories of the game/movie/whatever again in a strong way.

Physical distribution will die out to be non existent it's inevitable - by then we will most likely be all dead anyhow!
