SWAG FOR ME TOO! Why do I live at the corner of the world....

Oh good! I was told this info was being embargoed a bit longer....

I'll have more specifics for you guys when I know a bit more about what info is being released elsewhere and when, but I've been saving at least one image to reveal here and nowhere else (until the galleries open anyway).

Some additional details:

The pop-up shops will have specially numbered editions of the art (the sizes of which I'll share in a follow-up post) and the chance to get some in-person signatures, but we've got additionals of almost all of the art to sell online for everyone that doesn't live in NY/SF.

This came together pretty quickly, but I've been really impressed with what we got and there are quite a few more pieces that I want personally than I was expecting to....

Keep in mind that this is an art show more than a batch of Mass Effect lithos or something, so it's not going to be like traditional game-related art releases. There are lots of different interpretations of Lara and some enemies/places from the new game. You're not supposed to like all of them and (this is going to be hard for you guys) you're not supposed to want to buy them all. I think there are 16 pieces, so I just wanted to try to head off the "you guys are crazy to think we'd buy that much art" and "everyone in video games is getting so greedy" responses. Between commissioning the art and doing the lower edition sizes here, we're really just hoping to cover our costs while doing something a little interesting.

Anyway, I hope you guys dig some of the stuff that comes out of this. I really think you'll like a lot of it, and hopefully there's enough variety that everyone that wants to can get a piece that they really enjoy.

Will any of the pieces of art that will be for sale at the show be exclusively sold at the show? You said almost all of the art will be for sale online, so I'm guessing that some will only be for sale at the physical stores.

Sounds really cool. I too would be interested in knowing which ones are only available at the store.

I'll just put this here for now. Will come back with more details in advance of Friday's releases.

(The plan was to release two to three pieces per day, but there was a last minute audible/mixup and we posted all of them. I really did mean to post something exclusive, but now there's nothing left. I'll try to make it up by giving you guys more details.)

Her stuff is really cool. She did a piece for us for the Alice art show, too:

She has a way of capturing subtle female poses and expressions that's just really mesmerizing, I think.

Treehouse Brand Stores A glitch in Facebook isn't letting me post this within the album description, BUT: These limited edition art prints inspired by Tomb Raider will be available in both our NYC and SF Pop-Up Shops...as well as online at http://TombRaiderStore.com on 3/8!

Treehouse Brand Stores $40 for both screenprints and giclees. Edition sizes range between 150-250. Numbered, but not signed (unless you get the opportunity to get to the pop-up shop where some artists will be available to sign!)

Here's what I know right now (edition sizes are an ongoing discussion, but they'll be nailed down in advance of selling them, and while I'm 95% confident what I'm about to tell you is how it will end up, standard disclaimers about leaked info apply):

* All art is 18x24

* Everything is $40

* Numbering:

+ Screenprints are numbered sequentially 1 to 250 out of 250

+ Giclee numbering will be confusing. The editions at the stores will be 1 to XX out of XX for each shop. For instance, there will be "1/40 NY" and "1/40 SF" and so on for each number. So that's 80 out of an edition of 150, which means the last 70 will be available online. I'm waiting for confirmation on exactly how (and whether) the online ones will be numbered.

+ If editions don't sell out at the shows, those prints will be rolled into the online inventories, so there's a chance some lucky people may end up with those specially numbered ones without being there. (No, I can't take requests....)

* I'm including the zoomed shots I cropped for the store below so you can see the full art and a bit of the finer details. They'll be in spoiler tags so the thread doesn't get blown up with photos.

Sam Spratt - Tomb Raider Giclee
Edition: 250
NY/SF: 120 ea.
Online: none
(The 10 hold backs will be possible promo or contest bait. This image will be available as a litho in the near future for people who can't get to a shop.)

Logan Faerber - Field of Lost Sailors Screenprint
Edition: 250
NY/SF: 50 ea.
Online: 150
(The half-tone patterns on this one are neat. Check the detail image to see the interplay of really fine linework in the rain and the dot pattern half-tone to add contrast to certain areas. This is the only other one I've seen in person and it also came out perfectly.)

(You can't really tell what's going on in the tonal background elements from the full image, so check out the detail to see that there are actually some cool enemies lurking there with glowing eyes. I thought this one was a neat minimal design, and the colors were chosen _perfectly_. I really hope the printer got all the colors right.)

No promises, but I expect shipping should be the same as our other art. Get a quote for a litho (http://biowarestore.com/art/lithographs/limited-edition/me2-prototype-sr2-lithograph.html) or screenprint (http://biowarestore.com/art/screenprints/edi-screenprint-poster.html) to where you are and see what it's like.

We haven't picked a time yet for tomorrow, but I expect it will be noonish (MST). I'll probably be the one making it happen, so I'll bump this thread before I get started....

The litho will be identical to the foil-stamped one we did for the developers that you were drooling over in the other thread, only without the foil stamp. It'll also be signed, where the giclees aren't (unless you have him sign it while you're there). I'm pretty sure your itch will be scratched.

Thanks. If I miss the giclee, I'll have to try at least for the litho version.

Honestly though, it has been my experience that giclees are much better quality over lithographs. Colors are much more lush, better color contrast, and details in the art are slightly finer. That's why I would much prefer the giclee over the litho.

I have a buddy in New York and I've already emailed him about this. Hopefully he comes through. Haven't heard back from yet though.

Like you said though, I'm sure I'll be happy either way. A guaranteed signed litho sounds mighty good to me.

Hey Treehouse_Ryan,

When exactly will the art be for sale at the brick & mortar stores? Will they be sold starting tomorrow(Friday) or Saturday? The Facebook posts are kind of vague about that; or maybe I'm too stupid and didn't read carefully...

Thanks.

Treehouse_Ryan
03-08-2013, 01:06 AM
Everything will be for sale as soon as the doors open. I can't promise from here that the doors will open on time, but I haven't heard anything one way or the other.

There were talks about Crystal inviting industry people for something private, but I don't know when that would be at this point since it's supposed to open to the public tomorrow morning.

If I hear anything concrete I will pass it on, but they're pushing to open when they said they would....

MortalMonday
03-08-2013, 01:11 AM
Oh, so it opens Friday morning then? On Facebook, it kind of implies that the doors will open for the first time tomorrow evening from 6pm to 9pm for a community party.

I ask because I finally got ahold of my NYC buddy, and he may be able to pick up a giclee for me. I just need to tell him when and at what time he can buy it.

Thanks for all the help by the way.

Ok, I think I finally sorted through all the confusion and it pretty much boils down to this:

The Sam Spratt giclee will only be for sale at the two brick & mortar pop-up stores; and they will go on sale to the general public starting tomorrow morning (Friday) at 10 AM.

I finally got ahold of my NYC buddy and he can pick one up for me, provided there are still some available on Saturday. :( He can't make it tomorrow. I have to hope they don't sell out tomorrow.

I'm on pins and needles waiting to see if I can secure even one for me. I'm racking my brain trying to figure out who else I can reach out to for help. If he can get more than one, I'll see about passing it along to some member/s here. Honestly though, I've already had 3 PMs from different members asking for help.

Right now, it's only looking so so. Like I said, it looks like the earliest I may be able to secure the print/s is Saturday; and who's to say there will even be any left by then. My gut tells me that there will still be plenty left by then, but you never know.

It looks like they will also have the original art (that was used to make the prints) for sale at the stores. One of the artists (Cate Rangel) mentioned that her painting will be for sale in SF.

All of these look great... to be able to draw those lines and paint those strokes requires great skill.

But unless lithos/giclees/etc are a lot more popular than before, then I think it's safe to assume that there'll be a lot left from the pop-up stores. Those leftovers will very likely show up on the online store.

Can anyone get a photo of the actual store when it pops up? I'd love to buy something, but y'know, I'm down under.

Hi all, longtime lurker, first time poster. Wish my first post could have been under better circumstances, however...

The pop-up store SF looks nowhere near ready to open. Been stopping by all day (I work exactly one block away from the storefront), at one point a life-size Lara statue could be seen inside, but now it is just boxes on forklift palettes.

The door was wide open one time I went by, and I poked my head inside to ask when they thought they would be opening. Apart from not even remotely answering my question, the man nearest the door that responded to me was INCREDIBLY rude.

So on top of dropping the ball on opening on time, when I show up to spend literally hundreds of dollars that will pay these people's wages, they treated me with such utter disrespect I almost don't even want to go back (almost).

Disappoint.

Edit: took a pic, will post when I get home to my desktop (posting this from mobile right now).

Yea, I appreciate that. I will definetly be going back tomorrow (on the train out of the city for today), not letting that guy ruin it for me. Hopefully he is just helping setup the store, and won't be involved in customer service.

Hey everyone. I apologize that I can't say anything about it, but the pop-up shops are cancelled.... The art will still be available online, and I'll update with the new details after we get a chance to re-organize a bit. If it turns out that there's anything about the shops that I can say, I'll share that as well.

@unclear: From what little I heard from the ground today, it sounds like everyone there was having a super stressful time. That's no excuse for anyone to be rude, though, and I know that kind of thing lingers and leaves a bad taste. We only sent two people to SF, and it doesn't sound like it was one of ours, but PM me and we'll try to work out something to send you to make up for you having to go away bummed.

Ok, that definitely clears up why it appeared to me that noone was unpacking anything (and at times even packing stuff up more with plastic wrap). I will edit my post and redact any prior speculation that was under the assumption the stores would still be opening.

I am really sorry to hear this news, not only as a customer, but also for you guys, as it must be frustrating for you too (I imagine the reason for the cancellation was something out-of-your-hands). On some level, this actual makes me feel better about how things went down at the store when I asked about the opening. For one, it clarifies why he couldn't give me an informative answer, and also explains why he would most likely have been frustrated with the situation himself.

I do not think it is necessary for you to compensate me for anything, although at the same time I wouldn't decline, so I will be sending you a PM.

I would also like to apologize if in my frustration I came off at all crass in my previous posts. Not the best way to intro myself to these wonderful forums that I have been an active reader of for sometime now.

Hmmm I wonder what happened? I bet the artists are bummed about not having their work on display. Did I read that the originals were going to be sold at one of the stores? What's gonna happen to them now?

It seems we should all have a better chance of getting the prints we want from the online store now though, I hope there's a limit per customer to help stop the scalpers.

@unclear sorry to hear about your bad experience, but welcome to the forum :) Let us all know what they send ya ;)

At least one of the originals is for sale, costing >$1000. As far as I was told, by the artist per e-mail, they can be shipped.

My buddy just sent me an email with a pic of the store. He went earlier today not realizing that the stores were cancelled. Early yesterday I sent him an email telling him about the cancelations, but he obviously missed the email. It's nice to know at least that I can count on him for this sort of stuff. Not posting the pic because what's the point really.

Update.

I cannot currently provide more than vague answers, but the Tomb Raider Pop-Up shops didn't end up happening, and we didn't end up selling the prints online last Friday.

What I CAN tell you is that we'll be selling all of the gorgeous Tomb Raider prints online on 3/20, and we'll be featuring prints & artists every day - starting now!

Thank you so much for your patience & understanding through all of these changes!

I can't help but wonder what could have happened to have the shops be cancelled so close to their openings.

The stores had already received all of the merchandise, and also decorations, consisting of at very least the life-sized Lara statues (which I imagine are not cheap to ship). So essentially they had already paid for a great deal of the upfront costs for opening the shops, and didn't get to open to re-coup any of it.

I don't know whether or not we should speculate, or just let it be, but I imagine something drastic had to have happened for the plug to be pulled in such a costly way. I don't know much about it, but maybe it has to do with licensing or something?

Does anyone have a guess which one will end up being sold or just a personal favorite?

This certainly isn't halfbad but that can be said for quite a few of the entries.

We think shipping is working correctly. The multiple you're seeing isn't the rate, but we're baking some customs in so we can ship them duty paid. It's percentage of the total cart price, so it goes up with adding more art, but isn't just a factor of weight or multiple tubes or anything....

Can't figure out what's going on with PayPal. I can see it's taking a long time to respond, but the overall volume of calls to their servers don't seem to be too crazy. Trying to get some people on the phone, but have no answers yet. Will keep digging. Very sorry again.

ryan, could you tell us how many sam spratts are sold? I know many people with payment problems, so might not sell as fast, but im wondering since its the most popular!

Just under 100 sold. Definitely the most popular. Also, the limits for all of the art was set at 3, but I put Spratt down to 2.

They're running tests. Initially, they thought it was related to an issue on their end with locale codes they were having, but that wouldn't have effected US customers, and we were having problems with orders from all countries.

Some purchases are going through, so it's not totally cut and dry.

Just got an update from PayPal that they were able to place an order successfully, and they're going through their logs to find out more. No update just yet, but I was really impressed that they went that far for us.

Also still on the phone with our hosting company. They placed a test order as well and got the same error were receiving in our own tests, so they're doing their own digging.

Still hunting things down, but it's especially hard since there are so many orders coming through unaffected.

Something I've just been told:

Cate Rangel's original painting is for sale. The price is $900 plus shipping, and all of the money (except shipping) goes to directly to her.

PM me if you're interested. Not sure yet where or when else this will be posted.

Or well, it was possible to get the info by sending her an e-mail a few weeks ago.

_Just_ pushed a really unlikely fix for the PayPal problem, but it seems to have worked. Totally crazy.

Anyone that was having trouble with PayPal, let me know if it works for you now. Our tests are letting us get through finally, when we couldn't before.

Not sure about the credit card problems, but we saw a ton of AVS errors (which mean the billing address doesn't match what's on file), so maybe it was just a fluke?

I'm going to catch my breath and then try to post some pictures of the real art for you guys.

Could not be screen printed, but the lithos are produced. (You're probably getting notified of this as I'm typing here, but for others reading along: http://collectorsedition.org/forums/showthread.php?p=119209#post119209 )

They're not different enough to warrant selling on their own as a different edition, so we're just going to use them for giveaways and contests and such. Not sure what the ultimate plans are, but they're not likely to be sold, no.

Its so weird though, look at how many customers of treehouse are on this site. I mean we combined bought at least 30 sam spratts and also a lot of dead space dev editions.

I vote for Ryan as employee of the year!

I feel a contest coming up for ce.org :bananayes::bananayes::bananayes:

Ryan, when the winner from the deviantART contest is chosen, how long before the winning piece will be for sale?

Or some kind of estimate?

I don't think we talked that through. Depends on how the art comes to us, and whether we need to work with the person to get any formatting or whatever changes done before we can print it, etc.

Also, we'll apparently be flush with art for a little while, but I know it sucks to win something and then not get it right away, so we'll make sure it happens fairly quickly.

We were waiting to see the results before we decided on how it would be printed and when and whatever else around it....

Treehouse_Ryan, you are literally the worst thing to happen to my wallet since College Tuition! Haha, as always, thanks so much for your dedication to the community!

An additional question for you though, I made an order last night then realized I wanted to add another giclee to my order, so I made a 2nd order. The shipping was offset a little since the orders couldn't be combined. So, after talking with customer service they suggested I make a third order with everything, then cancel the other 2. I did that now, but am just wondering how the numbering system goes (are the giclee's individually numbered?), are the lower numbers going to be handed out in order of first come, first serve? Or is it completely random?

Thanks!

Wow, that's a pretty big league you just put me in....

The numbering situation is complex, but the bottom line is your situation won't really have an effect on your outcome.

I'm pushing really hard for us to ship these out ourselves, but that's not confirmed to be what's happening yet. If the warehouse ships, they pack in roughly the order things come in, but the way that they pull the prints won't be sequential and we can't ask them to sort that out, so the numbers would be essentially arbitrary. If we pack them, there is a bit more flexibility, but it will also be our first time doing something of this size, so I can neither promise nor enforce any additional complexity to the scheme to account for numbers.

Going further, the shops already numbered their prints, so people will be getting SF and NY marked prints arbitrarily as well, and that makes things less straightforward. Also, I unpacked most of them this afternoon and I can tell you they are not and are not likely to be sequential by the time we start stuffing tubes....

On top of all of that, the glacial rate at which they're selling means, depending on which prints we're actually talking about, there's a decent chance your spot in line (the line is a lie!) would be essentially unaffected anyway, even if that had meaning (which it doesn't, really).

Yeah, I really love a lot of them, heck probably most of them if not all. But obviously, I don't have that kinda money to spare, so I'll hopefully manage to nab a bundle more in a while, providing they don't all sell out xx
