Ok so we've all done the wrapping them in plastic wrap to protect them but has anyone found a really good storage method for their CE guides??

I am thinking of some sort of hard plastic case akin to the ones I use for my blu-ray steels??

Thanks for any advice my expert collector buddies...

I recommend not taking them in the bath and try to avoid fire.

You're welcome :thumb:

That was really useful - thank you :) Swifty will love to see that peanuts get a mention....

I actually hadn't considered alternating which way round to store them to alternate the spines...

Yeah so I thought about wrapping them in plastic but never got around to it....

Totally regret that now :(

I"ve looked into this prior and this website has the best stuff in general for books

http://www.demco.com/goto?PNHC69

I was particular to these

http://www.demco.com/goto?BLS166712&ALL0000&es=20130805103121142073

But problem with CE guides is they don't really have any standard height

I think there are 3 main heights or so though so you could just buy those 3 sizes

No peanuts no peanuts :nosleep:

:asplode:

And I always alternate things like that

Just makes sense to

I also need information as I'm collecting guide/art books and I want to display them but avoid any edge wears or any damage.

These are great fro my opene3d guides for sure but would still love to find something stiffer for my sealed ones...

I've love to know this too. Right now my CE guides are just wrapped in some plastic, but the standard edition guides fit into these things you get from the pound shop for storing letters and stuff.

Oohh that looks really useful! Can you add a few more pics? - interested how deep it is??

Sure can, give me 5 mins. I quickly measured the depth and it's about 17.5 mm

Hmm I've seen those before Mags

One day I hope to display all my guides though so I've always looked for protection options that would still allow me to display them

That reminds me of my plastic folder that I used to store my school stuff in.

I'd be interested in how other collectors tackle this problem as well. I have a lot of books and would like the spines protected from damage.

That's why I would love to track down the stiff plastic cases that fold around steelbooks but in a larger size....

The ones you refer to are made specifically for steel collectors Mags

At least the dozen or so different times I've seen them sold it was always for steel collectors

Oldest known example of them was custom made by collectors to protect steels much like the official slipcases that come with some steels

If you want I could track down the thread on another board that details making your own plastic slipcases out of thin sheets of poly-carbonate?

Personally, any guides i want to keep pristine i either have still sealed or i plastic baggy them. I then store them all flat,i dont stand them on their ends like normal people as over time this leads to the shelf wear or spine damage problem. your worried about They take up a little more shelf space but,i know i could leave them like that for 20 years & they will still be all nicey nice

Not to be nitpicky but I'm fairly sure if you lay CE guides on top of each for 20 years the weight alone would be enough to cause damage

How many do you put on top of each other?

Usually 5 or 6,the heavier/thicker ones on the bottom. Trying to think how they would damage over time,i mean its laying flat with a small amount of weight upon it. Surely its not really able to compress the book any further than it is unless its an imense amount of weight or pressure

Uh small amount of weight?

Average weight for a CE guide is around 3 lbs or so

5 or 6 would be 15 - 18 pounds laid on something for an extended period of time

That is how I store guides when I don't display them but I fully realize it would likely cause some damage to the spine after time

If you do it right I suppose and have boxes large enough that you can lay them on top of each other while keeping the spines out of the way if that makes sense

I suppose I don't know for sure it would cause damage but it seems fairly likely to me

The main reason shelf wear happens is gravity over time mostly, weight over time

Fully expect same principle to apply to those in boxes

Thought you got the shelf wear from moving the books in & out of the shelf, having them stored on the edges as well as the fact the hard covers are slightly larger than the actual page of the book so you have the weight of the pages bearing down on the bottom of the book. Then you have this weight having a tendency to pull pages away from the spine as well. Well, thats what i always thought:think:

Just had a quick think & a look,i came up with this on fleabay. Providing its sturdy enough i think this could actually work to store you books in & display them:)

I suppose having them vertical would pose more risk to the binding due to gravity but do still think there are issues if you store guides on top of each other in the long haul

I don't really worry about it that much to be honest

When I display them it will be vertical as horizontal display would bother me

HIPPEEDUDE
08-06-2013, 05:12 PM
Well, not all of us like reading sideways, lol:) The added benefit of horizontal is you just look at the books & know the title because you can read it without have to stick your head on an angle:D

True but well they are books

Think most people would consider it odd if you laid books on their sides on a book case

Same thing imo for CE guides

Just looks much better
