View Full Version : Why Collect Sealed Games?

I mean Memorabilia like Posters, Standees ect. makes sense for display but I don't understand the point in sealed games? Isn't the idea to open up games so you can play them? Same with CEs with all it's cool extra stuff so you can put THAT on display?

Thanks :)

I am mainly a sealed collector so I try to answer your question from my point of view.

First of all I don't have enough space to display every single bit that comes with a ce. The boxes tend to get bigger and I'm already struggling to arrange the boxes alone. Can't even think of displaying any of its content.

Secondly, it's already hard enough to keep those boxes clean from dust. I don't want to clean all the bits and bobs that come with them. (Just saying this because I cleaned my room all morning long, )

My third reason and probably the oddest one is that I like the feeling to know that all those lovely things inside the ce's never got touched by anyone after they were sealed. I like to think that they stay there forever and no sun and no dust can harm them inside their boxes.

Though, I do open up first Editions that come with the game and some dlc only to play them :)

I usually open the initial CE that I buy so that I can play the game. After that, I tend to keep everything sealed simply for values sake. There are certain cases in which I won't, like if different editions have completely different memorabilia, but most of the time that is why I keep things sealed.

This is basically the general reason for sealed collecting.

You are in essence buying an unused, more complete copy of whatever it is you're buying as it has the original seals and everything inside it has been untouched. I'm not really much of a sealed collector myself aside from a few sealed steelbooks but I can understand the mentality.

For example if you take old games, let's say Ocarina of Time. A sealed copy is worth maybe a dozen times or more what an unsealed copy is. Obviously this is supply and demand at work as there are far fewer copies of it sealed but that is supply of it, there must also be demand for it. That demand is likely due mostly to individuals who want to know they have a truly complete copy of the game. That they have what you would've bought day one back in 1998. I remember reading about a sealed N64 collector who had to sell some of his collection. He did it through craigslist to some fairly well-off guy. Guy in question was buying it for his kid apparently. At the exchange guy gave over $600 for 4 or so sealed games, then proceeded to hand games over to his 10 year oldish son who opened them in front of the collector. Suffice to say the collector started tearing his hair out lol

because you can just enjoy unboxing videos than sacrificing the seal :P

I used to think like that but then I started getting impatient and realized why would I buy to sell . . Im not that well off to buy w/e to sell and I want to enjoy it. . So I unbox everything now. . Well almost everything. For the most part I just take out the game and dlc and leave everything else untouched

Think of it as an investment.

Whatever you buy is worth money.

I have a lot of stuff sealed. I'm not necessarily a sealed collector, but what has happened is we go through these periods with rapid fire release schedules, and I don't bother to open games until I'm ready to play them. Since I have limited time to play I don't get to them all in a timely manner. The problem I have is that now some of them are worth significant money in sealed condition. If I open them, I'd be ripping off cellophane that's worth a hundred dollars or more in some cases. It creates a dilemma.

If you ever wanted to play it, you could buy an used one?

I only find it to be reasonable if the individual is planning on selling their items/collection. If they are, then there is an actual reason. If they're not, though, then I find it to be one of the most asinine things that a person can do. I'll actually be making a video to discuss this at some point because it's worth talking about.

I collect sealed and mint..not so I can "resell"..but because I like the feeling that the item is 'brand new" each time I look at it.

This! +1

Before I get a sealed CE (happens to me once a year or so :D) I say to myself to not open it...no luck.

Same here. I tried to keep my collection sealed not as an investment but to keep them in mint condition.

Various reasons to collect sealed. Personally I've done it for money/investment and it's become sort of a game to see if you can obtain the next $200+ jackpot. Look at how for example Bravely Default's price blow up. Sealed copies of that will only continue to go up as copies become scant after release (Hint: everyone go look for a mint copy quick, pretty sure with the soft box that gets easily damaged in mail, you'll have a harder time finding one in immaculate condition).

Well, I finally got around to making my video on this. My thought process is always of an objective, purely logical standpoint, so this video goes along with that. Watch the whole thing before hating/praising me over it =P lol.

Ahh..didnt know you were on here(@Zaku). Just subed to you a few days ago. Very good videos, man. One thing, for normal edition of games, the first saints row for example;the non plat hits edition is going for $100 sealed at the moment(ebay). Same thing with Demon Souls.

I collect sealed games because I know full well that I intend to sell them one day. And I think that people that do this get a bad name because of scalpers. I dont go and buy 75 copies of Lightning Returns to turn around and sell them; I have one copy and is displayed on my shelf(s), the same with my other CE's. I do not want to take anything away from those that do want to open them.

If I want to play a game, I will usually go through steam or some means where the dev is the one getting money in the end, I love game and want them to continue to make them.

Hey, cheers for the sub! Yeah, that's a totally reasonable way of doing things--as I made sure to redundantly point out in the video. I, myself, have no desire to sell my items, but I completely get the validity of that strategy! Thanks for the reply.

the secret otaku-strategy:

buy 3

1 to play, 1 to show sealed and 1 for reserve or sale

I personally like knowing them to be worthy some money ... most time more than i spent ... but i acutally doing this for games like FF or Zelda

as was said earlier in this thread sometime's I do intend on keeping it sealed just to assure it stays in mint condition. However many of the times the game winds up in my backlog and by the time I get around to playing it the value of the sealed CE has gone up substantially so I can't justify opening it. I'll wind up buying a cheap copy just to play the game and usually keep the game sealed in my collection. Sometimes I do sell but very rarely.

That's partially the mindset that I was trying to breakdown and analyze. If it's very rare/highly unlikely for you to sell, then why would monetary value out-weigh using/enjoying your things?

And many, many new items don't come mint--especially upon close, careful inspection. So I'm not of the mind that leaving them sealed really serves that purpose all too well. Boxes can still receive any imaginable kind of damage, Steelbooks can be dented and even scratched, and cases and inserts can also still messed up. The contents of the package will stay mint, but it's really not that hard to keep them that way, anyway haha.

Zaku, love the videos by the way and props for the obscure metal shirts! Def a metalhead and gamer myself. I maybe overstated my collection, I have loads of CE's most of which are indeed open which reminds me i'm in dire need of posting a thread with pictures of my collection. As far as sealed goes i'm not really sure why the potential monetary value outweighs me opening it. I have a sealed Ni No Kuni white wizard edition, should I probably open it yes cause it comes with so many great things, but to me the value of keeping it sealed outweighs its value opened and admired. My ultimate loot chest i've got out on display cause its awesome. I guess why do people collect cars, and haul them on trailors from destination to destination out of fear of putting miles on them. Because the depreciation is a risk they simply are not willing to take. I open my steelies but in the case of a rare game thats well out of print that still manages to be sealed in my collection the risk of depreciation is what's keeping me from opening. Does it make sense maybe and maybe not but I appreciate the time to respond to me post and game on. I'm 31 and still collecting so no your 24 years isn't going to suddenly change either!

I do keep them sealed:

* First, have no time to play all the Games I get, so instead being there v?veres with dust, better sealed...
* Second, as I do not open them, the value remains....sometimes in the good way, others don't...
* Third, if I want to play a game in a hardcore way, and I am with so much hule, I bought it second hand, and then I resell it again.

So my collection keeps sealed and mint, and the time I have to play, I do it with the Games i really do want to waste my time...

Can't find Better reasons...
