it seems, there is a new way to get collectors editions. after double fine adventure (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/66710809/double-fine-adventure?ref=live), games like wasteland 2 (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2?ref=live), leisure suit larry (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1451923705/make-leisure-suit-larry-come-again) or shadowrun (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1613260297/shadowrun-returns?ref=live) are popping up.

what do you think about it? have those CEs the same status for you, like other game editions? are you already a backer for a project?

cheers,
andy

I think it is a good idea to get games which would not have been made, made. I do have reservations about putting money in given how many games overshoot their budget or completely die off before they are released. BUT, as a collector and a fan of one of the franchises doing this, it is a pretty unique opportunity to be apart of.

I'm in for $250 on Wasteland 2. Hope it makes it through.

I like the idea of kickstarter. If there is a game that I think I'd really like, and the only way it gets made is for fans of the game to fund the production, then it seems like a great way to go.

But the more I think about it, this could ruin the "purity" of my collection. I think we all have certain guidelines we use when deciding whether or not to purchase new items for our collections. For me, one of the guidelines is to get the most complete version of a CE that exists (thank goodness I don't collect games that aren't available through US retail because the AC series would kill me).

If you look at the recent kickstarter campaigns though, the editions that are "complete" come only with hefty donations. And sometimes the editions you get at, say, $2,500.00 are unique from those at $250.00. I could probably do this once or twice, but there's no way that that level of donation would be sustainable over time. Plus since there's a time limit on when you can donate the money, and some of the pieces in the editions aren't tangible (e.g. a shrine to me in the game), if I didn't have the money on hand at the time, it would be forever out of reach. I'm not sure what I'd do if ended up in a situation where I couldn't maintain the status quo for my collection.

Just something to ponder!
