Hey.
I've been collecting "special edition" guide books recently, after I got the Skyward sword hardbound guide for free with my (pre-owned but sealed) FFXIII-2 CE. As of now, i have
-Borderlands 2
-Hitman absolution
-Halo 4
-Epic mickey 2
-final fantasy Xiii
-Final fantasy Xiii-2
-Skyrim
-Zelda: Skyward sword
-Saints row 3 studio edition
-Black ops 2
Are there any form this year that come in Hardback/special edition?
I love the artwork on them, and the interviews etc.
Will post pictures In a bit.
]I have many other guidebooks, but these are the "special" ones.

Yeah, I collect them. I don't go out of my way to get them, but if I can afford one at the time of release, or I see one at a decent price later down the line, I'll pick them up :)
I have:
- Gears of War 3.
- Fable III.
- Halo 4.
- COD Black Ops II.
- COD Modern Warfare 3.
- Deus Ex: HR.
- Borderlands 2.
- Soul Calibur V.
- Final Fantasy XIII-2.
- Bioshock 2.
- Saints Row The Third.
- Zelda: Skyward Sword.
- Uncharted 3.
- Resident Evil 6.
There might be a few more but I can't think :rotf: xx

...and what is up with this new trend of having CE guides now?? Seems more like a money grab for these guide publishers.
Interestingly this made me wonder what the first collector's edition guide was
I honestly can't think of it
Some old ones though are ACII, MEII, Gears of war
I'm sure there are some older ones but gears of war is the oldest I can think of
That was published about 6 years ago.......

Good on you. FF 12 apparently released about a month prior to Gears so that is the oldest thus far
Problem is definition though because there's been signature guides and such but not sure if they were earlier examples of two different versions of the same guide being released (i.e. the standard guide and the collector's guide)
Edit: Mags beat me to the punch well kind of, Was there a std guide available as well Mags?

I've got a ton of guides, but it seems that "Collector's Edition" guides is only a recent thing as all of my guides from my pre-360 days don't really specify that.
For CE guides I've only got a few (including some that are en route):
- Fable III
- Batman:AC (Catwoman)
- Tomb Raider
I may have more, but would have to look through the bins! ;)

CE guides have really started to take off since last fall or so but have been around for a while
We had a discussion in another thread somewhere about the earliest :quote:collector's edition:quote: guide
My requirements for it to be a CE guide are that there has to be at least 2 different unique variants
I.E. it's not a ce guide if ALL copies of the guide are CE guides
I believe the earliest found was a Diablo II guide with a unique cover art on it so 2000???

I'll be picking up the Halo4 one at BestBuy sometime soon since they price match, but I'd LOVE to get an Amalur guide!! - I didn't even know they had come out with a CE for that game until I signed up on here - I asked my Gamestop rep when it came out and they said they didn't have one - really wish they DID since apparently the signature version is rare!
Also, I see alot of people with Skyward Sword Zelda books - I just got the Zelda Historium hard cover recently at Gamestop, though not really a guide per se, that thing is pretty sweet! :)

True, but the most wanted or sought after ones usually arent around for long. The ones on special or you get cheap generally arent a wanted item occasionally you might find a bargain. I managed to get the Halo 4 Collectors guide for $15 from JB Hi Fi,though i think it was a mistake as all the other guides were $30:D
asiak75
05-20-2013, 09:20 PM
I would also add that depending the edition you might find some guides that were sold out 1st edition mainly and sold as 2nd edition for a bargain...(Hate that so much...)
The really really rare guides are those OOP obviously were there was one print run only...best example known to me is Bayonetta and the GOTY Fallout CE HB guide.
You also have to check the Publisher...Piggyback are usually reprinting most of their guides. Not the case of Futurepress...and quality wise FuturePress is far far better.
Think Killzone 2,3 CE or the Fallout 3 Softback edition...as for Bradygames it really depends on their release, older guides not necessary CE's, were great and color full but they tend to be sensible and needed like comics almost dust jackets to protect them.
I say if you get a bargain on any guides CE or not, then go for it if you are collecting with no resell in mind. Otherwise I hope the above gives some insight.

The problem I have with believing any guide to be rare is that the first print run is in the tens of thousands
The Fallout 3 GOTY CE Guide for instance used to sell for 50 - 70 USD mint but due to so many coming back on the market recently from ppl seeing the prices, a mint copy goes for 20 - 30 USD
The Fallout 3 GOTY CE Guide has a print run of at least 40,000 which for a CE might be on the lower end but for a CE guide? Plenty of copies
I suggest you wait and watch the market for a while to get a feel for what any particular guide is truly worth
The Zelda Phantom Hourglass CE guide used to sell sealed for 75 - 100 USD but now goes for 30 - 45 USD or so
HTF guides are Bayonetta and the killzones solely because the only English versions were distributed in the UK and maybe Aus/NZ
So their print runs are probably smaller but still in the tens of thousands for sure

Swift, correct me if I am wrong but I strongly believe the GOTY HB Fallout 3 guide was released in limited quantities and again if I am not wrong they limited the print because of the massive amount of pages, it was sold out quickly and so far I can only find this one listed on eBay.
http://www.ebay.ie/itm/Fallout-3-Game-of-the-Year-Collectors-Edition-Prima-Official-Game-Guide-Hardc-/251263088164?pt=US_Nonfiction_Book&hash=item3a80727624
Saying this the release of the Skyrim GOTY CE guide has the same potential...
I agree on some of your points but you have to differentiate around the publisher as it dictates the amount that will be printed and even if it is more than the average Game CE it is way more tricky to maintain a book in sealed new condition over the years compared to CE games.

States the numbering on the guide at 36094 hence at least 40000 copies
I think 50000 are likely as this is certainly a small sampling
So while it is limited, it is not rare and will never be that rare tbh at least imo
It is desirable and does ebb and flow in its availability but there are simply too many copies of it for it to be that hard to find
Don't get me wrong I love that guide, paid 35 or so for it mint and it's great but there's quite a lot of them
I can imagine it might be a different market for someone outside the US but you always have to compare markets to find the best prices
Books are hard because shipping them internationally is so expensive
Saying this the release of the Skyrim GOTY CE guide has the same potential...
I agree on some of your points but you have to differentiate around the publisher as it dictates the amount that will be printed and even if it is more than the average Game CE it is way more tricky to maintain a book in sealed new condition over the years compared to CE games.
I disagree for the most part as almost no CE guide has ever been made in truly limited quantities. I seriously doubt any has been made with less than 20,000 copies or so but some are in different languages so hard to gauge English copies
What I meant before about comparing CE's to Ce guides is that CE guides are actually usually made in lesser quantities than a lot of CE's BUT they are usually considerably less collectible
For instance how many people have you seen that collect CE guides but not CE's? Reverse of that how many ppl do you know that collect CE's but not CE guides?
Hence the collector market for CE's is much greater than CE guides and CE's can indeed become a lot harder to find for a reasonable price
Very few CE guides have hit big sale numbers on ebay and even when they do, they tend to fall again as ppl list them etc.
I would also point blank disagree on the sealed point you made as most collectors keep game guides sealed as with the internet today the guide itself is not that valuable so just a collectors item and no point to open it
Obviously sealed CE guides are rarer and worth more than unsealed. What I mean though is a lot more people will keep CE guides sealed then CE's for instance
There are plenty of sealed copies of the Fallout 3 CE GOTY guide on ebay now and in the past month or so
One is on auction and bid is up to 36 USD I think? Another is a buy it now for 100 USD but has been up for a while with no bites
I don't mean to sound argumentative as you seem like a true collector so I respect that but most CE guides don't really appreciate in value in my opinion even some of the older rarer ones
There is perhaps one exception to that though
I believe that there were a few copies of the Saints Row the Third CE guide in existence that was planned to be released but cancelled
Hence a copy of that would be a unicorn of CE guides
I have no confirmation of its existence or evidence of any kind, save my word that I saw an auction for it on ebay from a relatively reputable seller who sold them for 150 GBP at the time

Yes coma but even you keep some guides sealed, don't you?
One's without toys in them
That says volumes to me about the nature of guide collecting :rotf:
I still like the pretty pictures and nice paper they're printed on lol

You did make your point no doubt...but still there is a market collecting guides as there is someone collecting match boxes...and what seems to be valuable to me might not be for you...fact is i agree there are high volumes but as you said language wise they might be more limited per region like the MGS or the Ni No Kuni CE Guides...even if they launched a 2nd run.
Anyway...its a good debate, now get me a couple of the Fallout 3 CE guide Futurepress release and I might forget everything I said...oh and I believe you are talking about the Saints Row the Third CE guide released by Prima? Well I thing rarer than that is the Nights Journey of Dreams Bradygame release Japanese translated and published with a million misprints all throughout the guide...

Good to hear i didn't step on anybodies toes
It's all just my opinions anyways, just hot air and all that
Value is all about what ppl are willing to pay and ppl have paid a lot for some of these guides discussed in the past
lol I'll just buy some of those prima Fallout 3 guides and add a futurepress sticker ;)
You're right though futurepress makes better guides
I should have been clearer about the saints row the third guide quip
I also factored it's desirablilty into the factoring of the rarity
I personally have no interest in the Nights Journey of Dreams guide even if it is rare. Same with the dark souls/ Deus Ex guide misprint
And to be honest, if Saints Row the third CE guide does exist it could very well have less than 30 copies in circulation so would def be quite rare
Again I pulled that number out of the air but I have been looking for it for quite sometime
Honestly think it may not exist and that ebay listing was a scam or money laundering or something

Was the cover of it black or white?
The standard edition of the Saints Row the third guide was labeled "studio edition" even though it's just the normal edition of the guide and was white

I do agree with Swift's point in that for the most part; most people I know that collect CE guides (which isn't that many to begin with) keep them sealed. It's because most of us, like me, only buy the guide to collect; and not actually use.
The last guide I actually opened was probably Bioshock Infinite, but like Coma said, it was for the toy :lmao:
Now, I don't go out of my way (well that's a lie because I just drove 13 miles today to get the Injustice CE guide at 50% off) usually to buy them. I also try to not overpay - or even pay full price.
Most CE guides go on sale, even the "rare" ones before they sell out.
For example, before the 1st run of Skyrim guides became overpriced on ebay; they were cheaper than the MSRP on amazon lol.
The only guide I'm considering paying full MSRP right now is the MGR Revengence CE guide...just because online is overpriced, and Best Buy apparently "took it out of their system" completely.

It was indeed cancelled hence if a copy of the collectors edition guide does exist somewhere for whatever reason, it would be very rare
Again though just one old ebay sale that has since been removed from ebay

I wouldn't worry about it
Because most people don't open their CE guides the discrepancy in price/value between a sealed and an unsealed guide is far less in most cases then for a lot of other VG collectibles imo
Also the new vegas guide isn't overly rarer in and of itself

Looks like CE are not the only ones sort after looks like Darksiders Signature Series Strategy Guide (Bradygames Signature Guides) (Paperback) on Amazon is going for $133.89 to $900.00 I did not think this would hold any value might be worth holding on to my copy after all. Looks like some of these paperback books are worth more in two years like Batman Arkham Asylum Signature Series Guide (Bradygames Strategy Guides) by BradyGames [Paperback(2009/8/19)] (Paperback)
by BradyGames (Author) on Amazon is $191.91 US.
