Will NINTENDO be "forced" to go back to disc based games for the Switch Replacement?
Hello fellow collectors, just like the majority of you, i yearn for the yesteryears where video games came out on cartridges..we all know that the current gen games with the exception of Switch, the game packaging format of "DVD's" feel cheap and flimsy compared to cartridge based games..i was reading in a journal that Nintendo had to re-think their game cards due to exponential rising costs due to chip shortages versus the cost of returning to a disc based system for the next gen where the disc "DVD" is plentiful and cheap to produce as opposed to the current console Switch game cartridges, which are prone to shortages and higher production costs...how do you guys feel about Nintendo possibly contemplating on returning back to CD/DVD/Blu-Ray style game formats? for their next gen Switch replacement console?..i for one, would be extremely disappointed and i know i would not enjoy it as much for collecting purposes as Switch physical game collecting!...i read Nintendo feels "pressured" and are stressed out about the never ending chip shortages and increased costs of Switch custom cartridge manufacturing versus the abundance of easily accessible and cheaply manufactured High definition DVD's etc.

Re: Will NINTENDO be "forced" to go back to disc based games for the Switch Replaceme
I understand and we are headed that way of pure digital..but we are at least 10 years away..especially with brick and mortar stores still wanting physical copies of AAA games and heavy hitters to drive traffic into their stores..they have already stated that if game publishers were to pull physical copies of AAA games from their store shelves entirely, they will stop stocking and promoting there other merchandise and swag so we do have to keep in mind how much power and influence big box retailers have over gaming companies and how they market there product..in addition...the roll out of 5G has been a total mess..with further delays and setbacks....so i do not see a all digital future until around the year 2030-2032 when it comes to video games.

I agree that fully digital is still some years away, and trust me that i am not happy about fully digital either.
Regarding the threats retailers made, publishers are just selling the CE's themselves. More and more CE's are being released exclusively in the publisher's stores. The question here is, will it be worth to Nintendo to invest on a different way to do things, considering that both the way they do now and the way others do, will both be obsolete in a dozen years or so?

Re: Will NINTENDO be "forced" to go back to disc based games for the Switch Replaceme
I don't expect Nintendo to go back to disc unless the next system is a permanent 'under the TV' console and not like the Switch and be portable.
Discs are physically too big for a portable system unless they're similar in size to UMD's, but they hold less than 2GBs. It would have to be a proprietary format. I'm still a big physical collector but I think all consoles next gen will most likely be digital only. They're slowly passing the 'storage' cost onto the consumer so they don't have to worry about it. Charge the same for the games but you have to pay extra to store them (extra SSDs, SD cards, etc). |

I think Nintendo's next console will use an expanded version of the cartridge, with more capacity. I highly doubt the console will be anywhere near 4K since Nintendo doesnt really chase specs. They will most likely be the last company to go fully digital, but that day is coming sooner rather than later.
