I've been toying with how we could do something similar for the CEs we want to make, or whether a kind of general Hot-or-Not category approach made sense in terms of what collectors like in their CEs (I'm so sick of book-ends, but they were everywhere for a while).

Have you guys seen this happen much with other CEs in planning?

It happens on occasion. I think different collectors like to see different things me personally I care most about the quality of the packaging, good materials, well designed etc. as for included items I like anything that is a 1:1 replica from the game world, replica weapons, or other trinkets that played a key role in the game.

I know other collectors love figurines and statues but I personally don't like them.

Normal gamer tend to like extra DLC but I think most collectors find that to be fairly worthless.

Some things that everyone pretty much always appreciates:

• SteelBooks
• Large format Hard-cover artbooks
• Cloth Maps
• A package design that looks great on the shelf.

I want to especially point out that last item there... Even regular gamers appreciate box art that looks great and has an artistic flare to it, as opposed to just the tired GAME TITLE above the GAME HERO art style.

Case and point, there was such an outcry from fans over the lame/generic cover art for Bioshock Infinite that they opted to put alternate cover art on the reverse side of the cover paper, and put it to a vote.

Considering CE's will SHOULD sell out on release day, there's no real point to designing the artwork for "shelf appeal" for uninformed gamers, instead it should be something that fans of the franchise will appreciate, and look like something other than just a game box.

I do like these polls, but they are only useful for CE that will include miscellaneous items.

Agreed.
Blizzard makes the best CEs out there. Same for CDPROJEKT and the witcher.

The dead space dev team edition was perfect, one of the best CEs this year.

I liked the decision to not include the game inside and keep the costs down.

The Dead Space 3 Dev Team is, definitely, a step in the right direction.}

EDIT: and Ryan, don't do what you guys did with dead space 3, announce the dev team edition, the artbook and the watch in the same month. Stop announcing things a couple of days in advance, including the dragon age Vol 1.

There's no need to hide things from us and announce it a couple of days before you open the pre orders. Learn from Sideshow, announce everything 2-3 months in advance so we have enough time to save money and you don't piss off the fans.

I totally agree with this whole part here. I keep a VERY strict budget, to the point of, I can't just make a random item purchase that I happen to spot on ebay or elsewhere. So a few months notice is very much appreciated by me, as it means that I can try my best to tweak my budget to fit whatever it is, in, and if I can't fit it, then at least I know there was nothing I could do.

But when it's announced a few days prior to going up for order, I can't do anything about it. And then I get pissed because I've missed out (hence why I am gutted about the signed copies of the Dragon Age book).
