They never announced that it would be a "separate statue" or that it would be "an exclusive statue" aside from the original. They announce it would be an artist proof. Some people tend to be extremely picky when it comes to the painting of the statues so they prefer an unpainted one and that's how the artist proof comes about.

They do it all the time... Scion (sub company to toyota) releases "limited" exclusives every time they release a new car... when in reality all they really are, are just differently painted cars.

Scion TC 2013 "Zeus" version

Scion TC 2013 regular colors

They do it on a yearly basis 2008, 2009, 2010-2013, and i'm sure scion isn't the only company that does it...

We're close to the same page here yet still misunderstanding one another.

In regards to the McFarlane statue, they initially said 1,000 are being produced. Afterwards that was changed to 950 and 50 for an unpainted version. That is just silly. You're paying for an unfinished product taken from the original production of 1,000.

That's where I mentioned the limited editions for vehicles. Sure the paint is different, yet it is unique and limited. Now if they took a limited edition of 500 cars, then near release said "hey 50 of the 500 will be unpainted" yet charge the same price, for an unfinished vehicle, doesn't that sound silly to you?

To be more on topic specifically, I like a lot of these statues, and want the new Tomb Raider one coming out. Yet the "exclusive" is just an extra arm with the shotgun in her hand. The statue is still the same, so in reality there are NOT two versions, just one big production. I won't support companies that do that nonsense.
