It's not entirely their call on the materiel used. They have certain weight/dimensions they have to meet in order for the gyroscopic motor and servo's to actually function properly. If it was a metal husk on claptrap, they'd have to get heavier duty(and far more expensive) motors as well as servo's.
Think of it like those little remote controlled helicopters. There are cheap ones that are $20 sure, they're all plastic and rather bad. Then there are ones that are in excess of $200, and it's because they have metal frames, metal husks, more powerful motors to handle the weigh, higher power servo's which require more room, etc.
I agree that $400 is an asinine amount of money. And I agree that you should get more for that huge amount of money. All things considered though, I still wish I could get one.
