Promotional items

Is there any way to verify that promotional items are legitimate? I'm guessing no. For example there is so many promotional game posters on eBay.

Do people that collect promo items just trust their instincts that its real and not a fake?

I either collect from events held by game companies or game retailers. So there's never really any second-guessing.
