What's the difference between a giclee and a lithograph?

A Giclee is a form of high quality digital printing. A fancy machine sprays fancy ink on fancy paper and the result is a nice piece of art.

I am biased here, but I think screenprints are way, way cooler than giclees. Screenprints are a very specific process of cutting out individual colors and printing them on top of each other mechanically to create the final product. They have a lot of technical limitations, so the art has to be prepared with being screen printed in mind ahead of time, and not every art can be screen printed. The paper is nice, heavy stock, and the finish is usually matte, but can contain metallic inks. There's a lot of craftsmanship involved, and a neat history and culture behind them. It's entirely possible that it's an acquired taste and the limitations involved would mean people like them less, but I think if you know about the process some you can appreciate the art that much more for the work involved in it....

Again, I'll freely admit that I'm obsessed with screenprint posters and so am a biased opinion.

We're selling the giclee in the store, but as was talked about elsewhere, the original plan was to have them be exclusive to the art shows and do a litho on the store a little later. This means we have one of each, printed off the same art....

Jed (our CEO) liked the giclee better. Chris (our head artist) liked the litho better. I was kind of torn.

The litho has better saturation, I think, but the blacks are darker/better on the giclee.

The overall fidelity of the giclee strikes me as being a bit finer.

The litho is full-bleed and has a glossier finish to the paper (and is signed), but the giclee is undeniably nice. You guys were clamoring for the giclee, so I'm guessing we made the right choice, ultimately, but I'm not totally sure....

Not just you. These aren't the greatest photos, but there is absolutely a difference. That was what I was referring to with the saturation in the litho that I preferred. I think somewhere in the middle would be perfect, but they are what they are.

It's probably related to differences in inks and paper, but the two were also printed by different printers, so I imagine there are quite a bit more variables involved than just those two things....

I know everyone wants #1, but I have seen other sellers do this. But I also understand from a selling point of view this can detract buyers...what is your thoughts..:nono:

That would be more difficult with shipping, making sure everyone gets the right number etc.

Also, this tends to be only done when either the print is very low, or where the product is printed when ordered (mostly more expensive stuff)

Yeah, sorry. Logistical nightmare. Shipping mistakes are bad enough when the stakes are at a normal level, but promising specific numbers and then having it go sideways would be devastating, i think.

To say nothing of the extra damage to the art caused by the packers riffling through the stack every time they pack an order looking for a specific number instead of just grabbing from the top.

On top of which, we'd be charged a lot more because the warehouse people 1. wouldn't want to do it and so would charge accordingly, and 2. it's legitimately extra work. So we'd have to charge you guys more to make ends meet.

And if that weren't enough, there are lots of instances where we don't know the number of the item without breaking a seal or otherwise adding a bunch of extra work. That wouldn't be an issue with this art, I don't think, but if we wanted to send them along pre-rolled or something, then there would be no way to figure it out unless we had a different SKU for every number instead of one SKU and numbered products.

I could probably go on.....

Neat idea, but it doesn't scale.

The packaging indicated the number of the litho (not by pen but on the label), that being said it wasn't possible to pick a number.

These prints are honestly one of the coolest ideas i've ever seen done with video gaming merch. I highly applaud both treehouse and square for taking the risk with this unusual promotion. I hope we see similar things with other franchises as well.

I think it's a great piece but am in the same boat as you, thinking there are much nicer pieces out of the selection. Although artistically I don't think it's the best, what does draw me to it is it's the easiest to associate with the TB franchise/game. The others, most people wouldn't know they're based on tomb raider unless you told them (that's also part of their own allure, imo).

I like alot of these some are funky but I collect art of all kinds. As of now I bought the spratt as well just because I loved the new tomb raider game so much. This was a perfect movie style poster for the reboot. It really shows the shit laura had to endure and represents the game the best.

This is the second time i am dealing with this kind of thing in as many days, please stop calling for forum bans, whatever somebody buys or sells outside of this forum is nothing to do with this forum.

We've just canceled some of the additional print runs and will stick to what was produced for the shops, so a few of them are suddenly more exclusive than previously announced (if any of you were on the fence).

Our tubes and special butcher paper show up Tuesday, so we should be able to start shipping out next week. I think you guys are going to like them so much more in person--I just wish you could see all of them!

Anyone that ordered only screenprints may have already had theirs shipped from the stock that was at the warehouse. None of the giclees have gone out to anyone yet....

Yes, they're numbered per store, so: 1/20 NY and 1/20 SF for the editions of 40. Haven't been able to get a consensus on whether the couple printed above the editions for the shops will be 1/60 or 41/100, but they'll be the ones without an NY or SF, so will be different regardless.

The Spratt lithos are signed, but we don't know what we're doing with them now. The Spratt giclees are not signed, but will be numbered (out of 120 for NY and SF).

I've got a few ordered (all giclees, no screenprints) and yet I still want more. I love all of them except the Kyle Smart one if I am being honest (I just dont like that one as it doesn't look as good, and it kinda copies a giclee that Rufus Dayglo did for SGDM).

But, if I ever get round to getting the rest, then I'd get that one too, for completions sake.

The next one on my list is Shussan Suru so I really hope that it doesn't sell out before I can get a chance to get it xx

But I think with ebay it's something like as long as you can ship it within 30 days of auction end, you can sell it

Set of screenprints came in today, was expecting them to ship together with the full set of giclees.

I was very surprised how deep the black Taylor print is. The photos don't even show you the level of darkness. The Ngai print of the bleeding face is so sick, I love how so much of it is reflective gold print.

We rolled and stuffed over half the US orders Friday, and another 50ish just now.

After getting the shipping label printer mixup sorted, we figured out the best way to pack them with the oversized tubes we had. We found out on Friday that we didn't get all our tube caps, so replacements are being rushed to us and hopefully they show up tomorrow so we can keep things moving....

I really think you'll be satisfied with how they're packed. They won't be fun to open, but I'm confident they'll show up safely. And if something terrible happens to everyone's posters because of how they're packed, it's completely my fault. The packing configuration was my idea, I have personally rolled all of the prints (with love), and I picked them with latex gloves on to keep my filthy mitts off your art. (When you get them, don't be afraid to rip off the end of the packing paper if it's taped to the tube--I may have gone overboard.)

The only thing keeping them from being totally perfect is that they were shipped back and forth and handled a few too many times with the pop-up shops and all that, but I'm being picky and side-lining anything with more than the most minimal of creased corners.

Can give more nerdy details about the packing if you're interested, but I imagine you'd rather we stopped talking about it and the damn things showed up already.... We're working on that.

No non-US orders have shipped yet. We had a paperwork issue with getting some kind of export license that was necessary for the way we wanted to do this initially. We think it was a mistake on their end, so we're appealing, but that's apparently a week or more to get handled....

We had been waiting for labels before packing the tubes, but we've gotten most of the orders done in advance now, and will finish them today.

I've been told the new plan (so everyone isn't waiting even longer) is to get the packed tubes rounded up and have them driven to the closest arm of our fulfillment company. So they'll get the tubes and will post them, but they'll still have been packed by us.

This is an evolving plan (yesterday it was something else), so details are subject to change, but the TL;DR is:

* We haven't been able to ship any international orders yet (sorry!)
* All the orders will still be packed by us, so aside from tube-crushing shipping incidents, your art should be in nice condition
* We're exploring different options to get them to you as soon as we can, so details may change, but only because we want to get them out yesterday....

Also, don't worry about getting hosed on numbers. They didn't get packed in numerical order, and I made sure to save some low numbers for you guys.

Yeah, when we printed the label the order was getting marked as shipped. Even for the US orders, people were getting their notices at least a day earlier than we were actually able to get the things in the mail.

Talked to Steph and she said you must have been one of the very first international labels printed. They've been canceled now, so your tube will be in the batches that go out very soon, however they end up going out.... Sorry for the false alarm.

Being in Canada, not even across the pond, I can attest to this. Both UPS and Fedex charge insane shipping prices, plus I always get stuck with customs fee's with them, on top of their standard "duty" fee or whatever they call it. I've even had instances where all told i'm paying $90 in shipping and fee's for a $40 item.

If you haggle with them sometimes they will waive the "duty" fee or whatever, or at least reduce it a tad. Anyways, sorry to derail the thread :P.

By request, the complete Tomb Raider official prints collection! I took these with my iPhone, focusing the lighting on the same spot so the consistency of color/saturation is constant. They're currently stored in a giant Itoya portfolio. Natural lighting was used for the shots though because of the portfolio, some of the darker prints show reflections.

I don't want to continue to derail the discussion from the Tomb Raider prints, but how do you guys store your oversized lithos/prints? I have been looking for a portfolio similar to the Itoya ones with a hard cover and clear plastic sleeves to hold my 24"x36" lithographs. I have found a few that are the right size but none that have the built-in sleeve/display book design.

Well, I have one from Prat (Start 4 Presentation Case) and well...

+ Does not bend in any way
+ Good ring binder
+ Good zipper
+ Ring binder means art/pages lay completely flat (as opposted to some portfolios where the pages are held down in the middle = curve at edges - this becomes gradually worse towards the middle of the portfoilio)

- Made in China - for a $300 MSRP presentation case :banghead:
- Marks in the leather from packaging
- The pages Prat use are annoying, it's hard to get the art in and out

I think some of the other concepts from CD are better. There's a probability they'll also appear, I guess.

The art itself on them is nothing I'm that excited about, and none of the depictions of Lara look particularly accurate nor very good. Not a big fan of litho's. I am hoping for more screen prints, just with better images and printed on different paper. Summit would have been much better as a giclee or screen print (would take a lot of screens). Litho's are cheap and have a better profit margin, so they will probably continue to go down that route. I bet, however, if they had TOMB RAIDER printed on the giclee's more of them would be sold out at this point.

I definitely know what you mean, even the pictures shown of them look very jaw-dropping and colored very well, but I'm just not feeling the art of the prints very much, they look a little unpolished IMO.

A few of them look pretty cool no doubt, but none of them really evoke the feeling or tone of the game all too much to me.

"Love the Island" is probably my favorite of the fan prints, but it reminds me of Shadow of the Colossus moreso than Tomb Raider.

Another thing I am pleasantly surprised about... the Spratt Litho was included in my order? I didn't think these things were available. Were they distrubuted out randomly to peoples orders? It's quite amazing as well! :D. It seems unnumbered however, unless i'm just blind.

That was definitely such a nice surprise! The litho is truly incredible! The colours on it are really nice. Although imo, the giclees are far superior, haha.

I think Romeo was perfectly on the mark when he said pictures of these things don't do them justice. Seeing them in person is really an experience. They're wonderful.

I definitely know what you mean, even the pictures shown of them look very jaw-dropping and colored very well, but I'm just not feeling the art of the prints very much, they look a little unpolished IMO.

A few of them look pretty cool no doubt, but none of them really evoke the feeling or tone of the game all too much to me.

"Love the Island" is probably my favorite of the fan prints, but it reminds me of Shadow of the Colossus moreso than Tomb Raider.


I completely agree with the Island print. I took my copy of Shadow out to compare the two. I haven't played the new TR yet though so I have no idea how that image fits.



I just received my giclee's and have to say, they ARE absolutely amazing, even moreso in person. I wish I could afford to get these things framed at the moment, but will probably have to wait a month or two :(.

Another thing I am pleasantly surprised about... the Spratt Litho was included in my order? I didn't think these things were available. Were they distrubuted out randomly to peoples orders? It's quite amazing as well! :D. It seems unnumbered however, unless i'm just blind.

Yeah definitely! The giclee's paper is very thick and sturdy, while the litho feels more like a poster? Although maybe slightly higher quality paper than posters. The colours on it though really do stand out in my opinion.

Once I get these framed i'd love to compare the litho and giclee in better detail though.

Yeah, I contacted a local framer here regarding getting them professionally framed. So with the mat, the UV protective glass and a simple black frame was around ?100, for each one :(

I'll do it eventually, but don't have ?500 to drop right now :rotf: xx

yeah im looking for something relatively cheap. So im looking at around 20 euro for a passe partout custom made and a frame (maybe 30 euro). I want both my spratts framed and my bayonetta litho so i would need 150 euro for that :(

although i have some huge frames... with posters...but have to check if size would be ok i think its to big. Do you like big passe partout or a close fitting frame?

I assume you have a preference for pen style/ink etc.

Mostly I get screen prints, giclees, and lithgraphs signed and it is pencil all the way if the medium allows it. Pencil doesn't fade or bleed and lasts forever. Most artists sign prints in pencil for this reason.

But like you mentioned not everything can be signed in pencil so I just make sure that I get a pigmented marker/pen that is fade resistant and I'll use it for signatures. No sharpies.

On a side note, I wish I had the time to go up to the Philadelphia Comic Con at the end of the month but work is kicking my ass at the moment. Most of the Firefly cast is going to be there damn it! Only 3 hours away.
