To be fair I did this too, I thought the red was unrepairble damage or something that only a doctor could take away. I had ot search for it and found out it was my radiation which is easily fixable by taking fairly abundant Rad-Away.

Yeah I knew Rad-Away can help with the radiation, but there weren't many at the beginning of the game, and I didn't know water will give you rads too so I jumped into water and got hundreds of rads one time...
