For me it's both.
Of course you have to care about the game. I'm English. I'm more excited about this one than any of the AC games. If I was a hoarder I'd be sitting in the Final Fantasy threads - a game I have zero interest in. But I'm also not going to spend nearly $200 on collectibles that shrink in value. It's not sustainable for me. I collect a lot of things. They bring me great pleasure. Future value is a factor (one of many). I have limited space and my collection changes over the years. Old pieces must make way for new. So in fact I'm the opposite of a hoarder. It's a criteria for me and many other collectors. Especially if an old piece can fund a new piece. It's just smart. To be clear it's a part of MANY criteria including my personal attachment to the game. Just like breaking down manufacturing costs between two levels of CE is not a criteria for me.
