I ordered on the Vault-Tech watch on the 29th July (so close :(), but it says I paid $47 for shipping.

When I go to the checkout now and get a quote for shipping it says it's only $25! (and has "customs duties free" next to it in brackets).

So does this mean I may have already paid for the customs fees?

I'll keep working on ways that make it feasible, because I agree it's a good idea and would be super helpful. After the initial push-back, I've scaled back some and am working on us doing a pilot program for just artwork (since it's in-house and shipping an extra print or two is only the most incremental of extra costs). No progress to report yet.

No worries Ryan. I understand that it comes with being an international customer and that things can't be perfect. :)

It may make me think twice about very small one off orders but won't stop my patronage for all the great stuff you guys put together. Appreciate the efforts on our behalf! :notworthy:

So, the shipping method will be duty pre-paid, which means you guys _shouldn't_ be charged, and we're responsible for paying that money on your behalf. So when we calculate the shipping in the store, we'll add a flat percentage on top to cover that (apparently we're also charged for a percentage of the shipping fee as well?). This will not be exactly VAT, and there will be lots of exceptions and rules we don't know about (but please tell us when you run into one so we can try to do what we can).... Basically, you'll be paying us a higher shipping fee for the option to not have to worry about having your package held hostage and pay other companies surprise fees, but we're not going to be charging you the exactly proper amount every time to zero out what we collect and what we spend. For now....

This is not because we want to gouge you guys on shipping. This is because I fought to get you guys an option before we have all the data we would need to do it exactly right. I feel like a half-step here is better than giving you only one option that is almost guaranteed to be frustrating. So when you checkout, you'll be able to see our inexact calculation ahead of time and make your own judgment call (and we'll be working behind the scenes to make the calculations ever more efficient/correct/cheaper over time). Consider this like a beta or early-access game. :) Not perfect yet, but hopefully still worth having access to in its unfinished state.

Apparently, we only added rules for the UK since that was the bulk of the complaints we received. Our shipping calculation rules are up to 2500 lines in a hellish excel spreadsheet, so our operations guy was reluctant to add in a new method for every country, but I bullied him into giving it a shot so there should be MSI (cheaper and probably with hidden fees -- aka our current method/rate) as well as MSI (duty paid with a percentage tacked on up front) "soon".

USPS priority international will cost $40 to ship a t-shirt. They don't do dimensional weight adjustments, though, so it becomes viable when you order a bunch of things, and I know they're the carrier you guys all seemed to prefer. So I'm advocating for that as a third option as well. We know the rates, so it's just math up front to make them systematic, and then some un-fun maintenance as the rates constantly change. I'm of the opinion that we just provide the options available to us and then see what shakes out, but there are valid counter-points that confusing options at checkout will cause people to just bail and you guys don't buy quite enough to keep us solvent, so we still have to worry about the regular folks....

We've also been talking to companies that specialize in this calculation (http://www.dutycalculator.com/), but we're not ready to pull that trigger yet. And we're still working on different international warehousing options.



This happened two years ago or so with Canada as well. The shipping companies/customs folks just changed the way things worked and suddenly all the customers got screwed while we scrambled to figure out what our options actually are. I'm sorry that happened to you and I'd be super frustrated in your position as well.

Our problem is we don't always know what happens after the package leaves our warehouse. MSI takes up to 6 weeks to even get us a final list of fees we owe on a shipment, and that probably doesn't include any feedback about what you guys have to pay additionally since that's handled by a bunch of separate local couriers. There are a lot of different countries and most of them have their own lists of special rules for scores of different classifications of products. And then those rules change, so you have to keep up with them, as well as the rate changes from the couriers and different fee structures around them that can change every couple of weeks. On top of which, our warehouse will add (and change) their own fees and rules related to specific couriers/countries....

And that's just the intentional changes. We also run into weird glitches and bugs from time to time, like when our replacements were getting dinged by more fees. It turned out that when we passed a value of zero to the warehouse, they would instead look up the price on file instead, so that was surprising and hard to narrow down. Eventually we just did a manual check before we hand off the order that says if the value is zero, make it one dollar instead because that was easier and faster than working with them on accepting the zero dollar value.

If there was a way to pass on actual rates to you, we would. In the absence of that, we're trying very hard to keep up and keep improving, and I am really and truly sorry it's still disappointing and frustrating a lot of the time.

For one thing, combining a bunch of orders into one shipment means those original orders never actually get marked as "shipped" without a fair amount of manual overhead. And this new meta-order has all the actual shipping information, then, but there's no record of it as a single order, so it wouldn't generate an email or pass on tracking info. To say nothing of all the internal accounting that gets triggered on order fulfillment. And that's only considering multiple shipments from a single store. Combining our stores compounds all of those issues exponentially.

So, on top of that, how do we then report it back to the clients? Do we just add up the number of individual orders and use that as the denominator to calculate a percentage of shipping and chop up the final number to pass on to each company? Or by item count, or by subtotals of weight? And what about storage fees charged by the warehouse to sit on the orders? Is that tracked separately and then calculated based on days between orders and line-itemed out that way, per client, or just split down the middle again (by item? by order?)? Do we need to limit the time we can hold things because at some point the storage fees negate the combined-shipping discount? Where is that crossover point for each combination of weights/dimensions?

Then we have to figure out how to message all of this in a way that makes sense to you guys who would be willing to use it without me having to write a novella every time someone asks a question about it....

After you pay this, a new address will be added to your account (a locker number in a treehouse warehouse), which you will be able to select at checkout. Chosing this shipping option will be free. This will also mean, your items will be marked as shipped.

As long as you have your yearly subscription, you will be able to keep your items there. Lets say, you are only allowed to store max 10 items at any time. When you want your stuff shipped, you login into your account and request total shipping cost. This will be than calculated, after which you can pay and items will be checked out. Of course this will take a little time for you guys, so lets say you charge a 5 dollar fee for doing so.

Afther postage + fee (plus maybe vat) is calculated, you can pay for this. And the items will be send!

BBTS does a "Pile of Loot" system, and anything you order/preorder goes into it, unless you opt not to.

You pay for the item, and the shipping cost for that particular item (had it been shipped alone anyway), and it goes into the pile.

You can continually add to it, still paying shipping for each item, so that when you decide to ship, the shipping cost is already paid for (I'm not sure if they refund you a portion if you pay too much shipping, since it would then be combined).

If you still have stuff in your "Pile" 180 days after it is added, it just automatically ships, to avoid it from just clogging up the warehouse xx

Wow. I would definitely cancel and re-order then. I just asked about this and the watch was initially set up in a USPS group, so while you should be free from extra fees, you may as well save that $22....

"Shipped" means something specific in terms of moving money around. Technically, all money we collect is deferred revenue that we can't recognize until it ships (and leaves our hands to you). So I don't think it could be as simple as shipping to a locker to mark the step complete, but that's still a really clever way of handling it. I'll write that up and circulate it internally and keep trying to get some movement on this....

thanks ryan, i understand that a lot of things are in play to implement this. But imho, i think this could be really good for business (of course i dont know how many buyers you have from europe, but i guess a lot). If they buy more because of this it would be more profit for you guys. Especially since a function like this would be used by people who have a lot of purchasing power. And if the yearly fee + collecting fee would cover the cost at your end this would be a WIN WIN situation!

You'll need to cancel the first order (either before or after you place the new one, but after is the only way to ensure it doesn't disappear between orders) to get your money back and make sure you don't end up with two. Hit up customer service to get your first one canceled and they should be able to take care of you pretty quickly.

Being able to have items stored and shipped as a batch is a great idea, although difficult to implement it would drive up sales I'm sure. There are a number of items I almost ordered but left due to the shipping/import fees/carrier fees being to high to justify the purchase but if I could have them all shipped together it would be great. May never happen due to complexity but a good idea nonetheless.

I paid 18.60gbp import fees for the first one, then when the replacement was sent, I expected it to be sent with zero value but I ended up paying the same fees again. To be honest some of that is due to UK customs

Obviously it shouldn't take so many replacements to get right (or even one....)

Shipping has been pretty good for me, but they do not roll the prints smaller than the diameter of the tube so if the tube gets a dent there's a good chance the print will too. The tubes they use are pretty damn sturdy though.

Yeah at that price a numbered edition would make more sense... but it tempts me all the same. Haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Yeah, I debated back and forth on that. They are limited, but they are not numbered. For that reason, they're not worth buying just to have something super limited and numbered (and they're not going to be marketed that way). But for the people that don't have collector-brain, they are still both cool and fairly limited in terms of scarcity.

The full scoop is we made 99 of them, but we didn't commit to whether that would be it or not. Either way, there will never be more than a few hundred of them, but that kind of vagueness is only bad news for advertising them, so we're not bringing up runs or saying anything about edition size (except for me over-sharing here, I guess). So they're limited edition in the same sense as the VBotM tees, or, say, TeeFury (which also claims Limited Edition), which I think is valid for the bulk of the people that will encounter them. This is why I didn't mention it here earlier--they're cool, but they're intentionally not being done for the die-hard collector.

As for the price, pewter figures regularly go for $10 - $15 even for smaller guys, and some of these are pretty big/intricate. And those prices are for mass-market numbers of figures, so yes this is a big purchase, but compared to what you would pay to get them individually, it's in line (or a little bit of a deal)....

Honestly I don't think I care about rarity on this one, it's super cool. I think Doom is a kind of niche market anyway, not super hot, not a target for flippers. Pricey, but I think I've talked myself into it.

Tin is a tad disappointing but understandable

It's a tubular tin with a cool vault tec sticker on it

The head has a slot and a magnet to hold it in. The arms and tail have like metal pegs that you slot in.

I don't know the most tactful way to talk about their "limited" status. They have a high minimum in order to even be produced, so that makes producing more of them than have currently been made less likely. And if they sell really well, there are always more perks to do.... I don't know how many Gaming Heads are keeping for themselves, but unless it's way more than what we got, I'd be surprised if there are more than 5k of each figure total. Also, I think they're being intentionally vague about the numbers to leave the door open to making more if things go nuts. I wouldn't buy them as a pure collectible if that's something you're concerned about.

They're just really neat, fairly inexpensive little artifacts from the game. They're not way mass-produced, so they're maybe collectible-adjacent, but the numbers shouldn't be the deciding factor here....

I have handled them. I would feel more comfortable fielding really specific questions since they're kind of not my jam, but I'll give you my reasonably-objective opinions:

The leather is a really nice balance of being soft top the touch while also having a good sturdy sort of ruggedness. I keep running my fingers on it and it feels nice (I also rubbed it on my face for a second and it was super smooth, but I hope that no one was looking in my office for that moment), but it's not insubstantial. I feel like it will withstand an awful lot of abuse, and I actually tried to tear it and got nowhere even close to causing any issues. The one I'm messing with is our sample, so I don't know how much handling and mistreatment it's received, but there are some scuffs and small wear in the leather (more than in the one we photographed), and it's been made to not open perfectly flat (I'm guessing this is in order to make the sections where you put stuff sort of stretch open a bit when you open the thing), so there's a spot in the middle at the bottom that stays rounded and I can see it potentially wearing extra right there (it's the area in the photo where you can see the stitching stop). I think this will ultimately add to the appeal of the thing, though, since it reinforces that kind of rugged, worn look. Also, I'm really enjoying the contrast stitching on the outside. It looks great and is also nicely sturdy. I tried to scrape at it with my fingernail and it held up really well (though I added a new scuff to the leather in doing so). it's the kind of scuffing that looks really bad at first, and then you rub it a second and it calms down but you can still vaguely see it.

The dragon on the front is pretty cool. It's actually slightly raised, so you can feel it, and it'll probably wear differently and stand out a bit later, but right away it's nicely subtle. The inside one is much cooler, but probably would have been too much on the outside. I normally dislike using the same logo/icon/art in more than one place on a thing, but here it actually works great, I think.

The ID window is top loading and there's no place to put anything above it, but there are two little pockets underneath it which I didn't expect. In the photo of it open, you can see the middle spanning part, then a thin strip of leather, and then the regular card slot space... That thin strip actually has openings to fit stuff in front of and behind it.

The insides of all the pockets are a brown canvas-type material that I'm not overly fond of but it looks like it'll hold up well and be strong, and it's probably easier to get things in and out of than the friction all leather would impart. My biggest complaint about the first ones of these I saw was the zipper section in the second pocket. I thought it made the thing too thick and I didn't want to sit on it and feel uneven, but I see we've found a much thinner zipper for the final product. You can still feel a slight difference in that one spot, but it's probably as streamlined as possible now.

It smells really good, which is not important for a wallet, but does speak to the genuine leather, I guess. The little black card in the photos with the gold dragon symbol is a nice little care card that I hadn't seen before. It suggests avoiding heat and sunlight, and keeping the thing dry which is probably just boilerplate leather-handling tips.

My biggest issue is a personal one, and that's the thickness. It feels too thick to me, but I'm kind of a picky asshole about most things. It's actually nearly identical to the thickness of the thickest point of my wallet (but this one was empty when I measured). I'm bad at visualizing size accurately, so the closet thing I could find near me to give you an idea is that it's just a bit thicker than the cap to a standard Sharpie.

The journal is really neat. The leather there feels more like what you'd expect out of those fringe-y ties you see around it. Still nice and soft (and good-smelling), but a little more texture to it. The size of it fits nicely in my hands and it's all bound with leather, so it's got this cool sense of not really having edges. You can feel the knots in the back if you squeeze it tightly (it's a book you'll be weirdly interested in squeezing). The pages are weathered-looking, which is a nice touch, but I'm not totally sure I like them (and they're completely unruled for the curious). I like the thickness of it quite a bit, but in at least this one that we photographed, you can see a demarcation where like two-thirds of the pages came as a unit and then the rest were added from some other block of pages, and for some reason that feels like a pretty big bummer to me. The left edges of the pages are ever so slightly glued together, but they're primarily just bound with more of that leather string, so maybe after using it a while it'll all stretch out and be kind of a comfortable mess and you won't notice?

The bag is pinned up to a display by our front doors, but it looks as nice as you'd probably expect. Not sure how to weigh in there anyway, really.

[Edited to add:] I'm being told by Dan here that the bag will hold a 15" laptop, but doesn't have a specific sleeve or extra padding for that purpose. So while it's well made and spacious, he says he wouldn't sling his MBP in it.... Also, he says hi.

I don't know if this was helpful at all, but my hands smell awesome now, so feel free to ask anything else....

I think I'll try the wallet because I don't care for the really cheap one I have (thin pleather) and it sounds like this one will cover my needs while wearing well. It seems like a wallet that will really show character over time.

As for the journal and the messenger bag, I don't have the money for the bag, but the journal sounds nice. After I fill up my current notebook, I think I will be able to justify buying that one :P

Looks like it could be triforce. Judging by the quality of that pic. Usually the paint is the problem. Otherwise I usually only see stuff of that scale on sideshow collectibles or from gaming heads.

I haven't seen one in person, so I can't speak to how it actually looks. It's coded as coming from Gaming Heads in our system, but I haven't been read in on any details and only found about it yesterday when I saw the images on a banner....

I'm of a similar mind. I don't really like the art itself as it doesn't look very nice on the metal like that but as it's highly collectible and I love Fallout I would buy it regardless at the right price. 150 USD is about right

You can screen print pretty much anything. More colors/screens makes it more expensive so usually with images with lots of colors, ect.. it's more cost effective to make a giclee or litho. But screen prints, especially with shiny metallic inks, are way more impressive to me and the process makes them more unique pieces of art.

I think the screenprint is something that, if done correctly, can be awesome. I actually really like, and sometimes prefer, screenprints for certain images.

For just about everything else though, I would have to agree, that the giclee is by far superior to the lithograph.

What's the point of something being limited if you can get the exact same thing unlimited, or in a bigger size that is more limited, or in a metal form that is more limited?

Again it'd be fine if they were always intended to be open editions etc. but it dilutes how limited the intial run was

I assure you in the real art world, 2nd edition runs of prints devalue the 1st edition. 1st would still be more valuable assuming they are the same but from a collector's point of view you would at least like to be told that these prints were going to be done in multiple runs

They just need to be upfront about their intentions of how many different variants and/or editions they are going to release and not just decide a year later to print out a new slightly different version. At this point I pretty much just assume everything they release will pop up as some sort of variant edition in the future, especially, if it's popular. I do not see why they could not have just used new art for the metal prints and keep the original images limited like we were led to believe. PAX/event exclusives :lmao:

It's really impressive in person. I get that 10k is a lot, but it was the only quantity that allowed us to get the price to something approaching reasonable (and there are a lot fewer of them than the Loot Crate or loads of other desirable collectibles). The three books all look and feel very different, and each of them is neat all on their own. And the clamshell is meaty and nice like the Dragon Age one (and that map on the cover really makes it pop when it's open).

Keep in mind, we also had to pay for all the text to be written and all the illustrations to be created; every other book we've had is something that's been done in massive quantities and we'll just take that content and bind it in something a little nicer or more special.

Anyway, this is a lot more than we've ever done before and I think it shows when you're actually in front of it (though the pictures of it turned out killer, I thought)....

I hope you dig it enough to give it a shot because there's a lot to like about it.

Yeah, we haven't gotten our hands on a real one yet, but it's going to be your standard (but nice) hardcover art book plus that extra signed insert.

We talked about doing an inexpensive softcover or something of just all the content in one binding, but that's probably dependent on whether you guys are right about the big ones still being heavy in stock six months from now.... Nothing in production yet.

To me this is a great idea.

I have read a lot of his reviews, and to me they always seem in-dept, detailed & true to an actual review, rather than a glorified un-paid advertisement that you see at times from :quote: unbiased places that make reviews for the "free stuff" they get from companies.

Do you mean from the Skyrim statue? The customs charges are a percentage of the price of the item, so for expensive things there's kind of no win. Plus for how big and heavy the box was to actually post, it's definitely a double whammy....

I am led to understand that books are duty free shipped to the UK, so if that's what you're looking at, it should be down to just the painful postage costs (being both big and kind of heavy makes it expensive to get anywhere) and customs won't be an issue. Totally understand if that doesn't help any.

Totally understand your hesitation. I think the content here is going to be agnostic to the Elder Scrolls vs. Elder Scrolls Online differences. They're set in the same world, and this is just lore and stories also set there, so if you're a big fan of the single-player games but don't care for the MMO one, there's still a lot to like about the books.... Did you read the sample chapters?

But it's a good deal of money either way (worth it, I think, when you see it, but not a small sum no matter how you look at it). We're going to roll out some more messaging/ads/etc and I have a pet idea for a video about them that I'm going to try to get made, so between whatever we can do and the first reports from people getting them, maybe you'll have some more info to make up your mind.
