Planned Blackout on January 18th

CollectorsEdition.org will be joining with thousands of other websites in a blackout protest on January 18th from 8AM to 8PM (-5 GMT)

We’re doing this to alert our visitors as to the very real potential dangers of two bills that are being discussed in the US Congress right now, the “Stop Online Piracy Act” (SOPA) and the “Protect IP Act” (PIPA). While these bills have noble goals of protecting copyright holders they are far too broad and threaten the very nature of the internet. At their core they would allow US media companies the ability to black list any website they feel infringes on their property, and do so without any due process.

Should either of these bills pass it will effect the internet freedoms not just of those in the USA but the world as a whole.

Collector’sEdition.org will be closed to show you what could potentially be a permanent reality for nearly any website that allows user posted content.

There is a lot you can do to help stop this, even if you’re not a citizen of the USA…

    I'm gonna miss you guys...

  8. vhal_x:
Since most websites will be down all day tomorrow, I am going to have a full internet/laptop free day tomorrow (well, excluding my Xbox, but I'll probably not go on Live anyway) Means I can get things done for once, instead of being distracted by this place xx

  9. gurpswoo1:
I am completely for this protest, if this bill goes through, it really will be the disaster.

Figures it will be down the day I get back

  10. vhal_x:
I really can't see the SOPA bill being passed, what with all the many people/companies that are against it? Hopefully... xx

  11. Lightning00:
This act was so stupid I don't even know Congress was thinking when they created it

Even LoL is trying to stop it and craiglist

  12. gurpswoo1:
When the people in congress are 45+ and don't know how the internet works. It's not all that surprising when you consider the the companies forcing them to do it.

1/18/2012 - The most productive day in modern history.

Here is a nice break down on what exactly SOPA/PIPA is and why it is unacceptable: http://blog.reddit.com/2012/01/techn...-sopa-and.html

  14. Pielord:
    Nice one guys!
    Fuck SOPA!!!!

  15. Ayiu:
SOPA and PIPA failed! I'm glad that they didn't have make it to US congress

  16. gurpswoo1:
Yeah just heard the good news, time to rejoice.

  17. vhal_x:
SOPA failed, PIPA is just postponed for a few months But hurrah! xx

  18. lhurgoyf:
They will just amend HR 1981 with the SOPA/PIPA details and run it through the voting process. HR 1981 (http://www.govtrack.us/congress/bill.xpd?bill=h112-1981) is already pretty bad to begin with since it requires your ISP to track all of your web activity for 18 months.

    , Oh well,

Ok we still have some work to do but we now have some real hope, maybe they have finally got the message. It's time politicians started to get the fact the the world is moving forward and leaving them behind.

The internet has allowed the individual to reach the masses who think the exact same way, its Sopa Act would not only undermined the revolution it created but turn back the clock to time and place that now feels dark and oppressed.

It is this fear that is driving us to protest and to try and kill this bill, it's for our future in the end.

    Spread the word,
